| BD Ventures operates through a management team of experienced professionals and an internal Investment Committee consisting of individuals from across BD who are skilled in venture investing, business development and technology assessment.
Peter A. Origenes, President and General Manager, joined BD in 2004 after serving six years as a principal and then partner with a private venture capital firm where he led or managed investments in biotechnology, specialty pharma and medical device companies. His expertise in commercializing life sciences technology is based on broad industry experience including strategy consulting positions with Bain & Company and The Wilkerson Group, pharmaceutical business development at Schering-Plough, biotechnology product management and development at Genentech, and pharmaceutical sales with Roche Laboratories. Peter holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Genetics and History from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Master of Science in Industrial Administration from Carnegie Mellon University’s Graduate School of Industrial Administration (now the Tepper School of Business).
Richard G. Minicus, Chief Investment Officer,
joined BD in 1999 and plays a key role in acquisitions and strategic investments. Before joining BD, Rich worked in business development for Pfizer’s Medical Technology Group. He started his career in corporate banking with J.P. Morgan and gained investment banking and venture capital experience at Merrill Lynch Capital Markets. Rich holds a B.A. from Amherst College, an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, a Masters in Physiology from City University of New York and a Masters in Biology from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Ben Verwer, Manager, joined BD in 1991 as a Staff Scientist. He has since made many contributions to BD Biosciences’ product line, among others FACSCount, FACSDiva, FACSAria, and Cytometric Bead Array. Ben has led functional teams, program teams and the program management organization and has experience in post-M&A integration. Ben has a PhD in Physics from Delft University of Technology and an M.B.A. from the Erasmus University Rotterdam, both in Holland. Ben is located at our facility in San Jose, California.
Jon K. Daigle, Manager, joined BD in June 2006. Prior to joining BD, Jon accumulated business experience across multiple industries, including medical devices, consulting, and aerospace. He worked as Manager of Business Development at InterSonics, a medical device startup, where he performed financial analysis and market research during the company's initial period of capital raising. Most recently, Jon worked for Carrot Capital Healthcare Ventures as an Associate while completing his M.B.A. at Columbia Business School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Washington State University, an M.B.A from Columbia Business School, and a Master of International Affairs from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University.
Monica Fernand, Manager, joined BD in July 2005 after interning with the group while she was completing her MBA program at Columbia Business School. Prior to graduate school, she worked as an Associate for three years at a Big Four accounting firm where she managed and led due diligence teams in the securitization of commercial-backed securities. Monica also worked as a Consultant for two years at a technology firm within the real estate industry where she advised clients in transactions and portfolio management. Monica earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from the Wayne Calloway School of Business and Accountancy at Wake Forest University.
Investment Committee
The assessment of new investment opportunities is conducted by a team of experts at Becton Dickinson from relevant functional disciplines. The BD Ventures Investment Committee consists of executive-level BD Business and R&D leaders.
