Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance

- Basic AD&D (non-contributory)
Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance at one times salary is effective on the first day of employment.
- Voluntary AD&D
Additional AD&D is available to associates to provide a cash payment for death or dismemberment due to an accident involving the associate and/or members of the immediate family. This insurance provides 24 hour, 365 days per year coverage against any type of accident in the course of business or personal activities. Coverage may be purchased in increments of up to ten times an associate's salary.
Adoption Assistance
Active, full time or part-time associates are eligible for $2,500 to help cover the costs associated with adopting a child. Eligible expenses are legal fees and court fees, fees for an approved public, private, foreign or domestic agency, temporary foster care charges before placement, medical expenses not eligible for reimbursement from another source, state-required programs and other required counseling, and transportation expenses related to the adoption.
AYCO Financial Planning
This is a financial planning service provided to you by BD that can help you evaluate your current financial health and design a plan to provide for your future. This includes outside investments and any other retirement or savings plans you may have.
Business Travel Accident (Non-Contributory)
Business Travel Accident coverage is effective on the first day of employment and provides twenty-four (24) hours per day accident coverage for accidental bodily injuries resulting in death, dismemberment or loss of sight subject to the terms and limitations specified in the policy. This coverage is effective on a worldwide basis while traveling on Company business. The Company pays the full cost of this insurance.
Credit Union
Several locations have relationships with a local credit union. Generally, credit unions offer the following services: nationwide automated teller, checking and savings accounts, IRAs, flextime saving certificates, loans, bank by mail or phone, traveler's checks, financial planning, credit cards, and electronic direct deposit.
Dental Plan
The dental benefit plan has two options for associates and their families -- Delta Dental's premier and Preferred plans. Delta Dental is a Preferred Provider NetworK (PPO) that has more than 116,000 dentists throughout the United States. Out-of-network coverage is also available. Both plans become effective on the first day of employment. Contributions are made on a pre-tax basis.
Dependent Care Account Plan (DCA)
The Dependent Care Account Plan allows eligible associates to contribute up to $5,000 annually to this account and to use these 'pre-tax' dollars to be reimbursed for eligible dependent care. The dependent care must be required in order for the associate (and spouse, if married) to work. If associates are currently (or are planning on) paying for dependent care, the Plan may provide them with an attractive and financially beneficial alternative to a tax credit. Not all states recognize the tax-free status of DCAP contributions.
Disability Compensation

- Temporary Disability Insurance
- BD provides a Temporary Disability Insurance Plan to assist associates with lost wages due to a non-occupational illness or injury for a maximum of 6 months. Salary replacement levels vary according to work state, years of service and employment status.
- Long Term Disability (LTD)
- Associates become eligible for membership in the optional Long Term Disability Program on the first day of employment. LTD is an associate contributory program and provides 55% income for eligible disabilities after the 6-month waiting period. This plan works in conjunction with the Temporary Disability Insurance Program (above).
Educational Assistance Program
We support associate's effort to further their education and provide assistance with these endeavors. Our program refunds eligible associates who successfully complete their course, for the full cost of tuition and registration fees. Courses must be job related and taken at an accredited college or university towards a degree.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
In some locations an EAP is designed to provide associates and their immediate dependents with confidential counseling services. The program helps associates with problems such as:

Associate Candidate Referral Program
Some locations offer an Associate Candidate Referral Program Bonus when associates refer successful candidates. Consult with the Human Resources Group for further information.
Fitness Centers
Fitness Centers are located at our Franklin Lakes, NJ, Sparks, MD, and San Jose, CA locations. Each Fitness Center includes a fully equipped exercise facility and a professional staff that can offer effective strategies for improving physical fitness and healthy lifestyle habits. The convenience of having an on-site facility minimizes the obstacles that sometimes interfere with a regular exercise program. The facility is a great place to reduce stress. Costs vary by location.
Health Center
Larger BD facilities operate a Health Center staffed by an Occupational Health Nurse. The Centers assist associates in achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Service varies among locations, buy generally provides preventive health screenings, educational programs, work-related medical examinations, treatment of work-related injuries and illnesses, travel medicine information, and emergency response within the facility.
Health Care Reimbursement Account
Associates may set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for certain unreimbursed medical, dental, and vision expenses incurred by the associate, spouse, or dependent. Examples of eligible expenses are: deductibles, co-payments, amounts above Reasonable and Customary limits, and unreimbursed health care expenses, such as hearing and vision exams.
Holidays
Each location offers a schedule of holidays that is published near the end of the calendar year.
Job Posting Program
Our Job Posting Program promotes associate development and assures that consideration is given to qualified internal candidates. Internal candidates will be considered first for open positions. Position openings are posted electronically on a company bulletin board and e-mailed to each location.
Life Insurance

- Basic Group Life Insurance (Non-Contributory) equal to an associates base salary is effective on the first day of employment. The Company pays the full cost of this insurance.
Supplemental Life Insurance may be purchases in increments of one to ten times an associates base salary.
Spouse Life Insurance may be purchases in increments of $25,000, to a maximum of $250,000.
Dependent Child Life Insurance may be purchased for dependent children in the amount of $2,000, $5,000 or $10,000 per child, for children up to the end of the calendar year when the child turns 19 ( or age 25 if s/he is a full-time student)
LifeWorks©
LifeWorks© is a family resource program provided to all associates and their immediate dependents. LifeWorks© offers a wide variety of practical advice, useful materials and referrals to local and national resources. Topics range from adoption to retirement. Information is provided in many formats: guidebooks, pamphlets, videos, tip sheets. All contact with the service is confidential and is made by the associate.
Long Term Care Insurance
BD provides you an opportunity to purchase insurance to cover the future cost of custodial, nursing and other types of care that is not normally covered by medical plan. If you become eligible for care under this plan, part or full-time custodial may be provided in a nursing facility, an adult day care center, or in your own home.
Matching Gift Program
The Matching Gift Program is designed to extend the impact of associate contributions to certain organizations or agencies by having the Company match their gift. Non-profit organizations that are open to or operated for the benefit of the general public are considered eligible for the Matching Gift Program. BD will match gifts of $25 or more up to a total of $10,000 per calendar year, per associate.
Medical Insurance
Medical coverage is available for associates and their families from the first day of employment.
In general, a managed care plan, point-of-service, preferred provider organization, indemnity plan and a consumer directed plan are the options available with varying levels of premium contribution made on a pre-tax basis.
Retirement Plan
All regular full-time and part-time associates are eligible for the Company retirement plan, the full cost of which is paid by BD. Service credits commence on the associate's date of hire with 100% vesting after five years of employment. Eligibility for retirement benefits under the BD Retirement Plan is: (1) Normal Retiree: On the first of the month coincident with or next following your 65th birthday, with at least 5 years of service; (2) Early Retiree: At age 55 with 10 years of service, or (3) Postponed Retiree: After age 65 with at least 5 years of service.
Savings Incentive Plan (SIP)/401K
All regular full-time and part-time associates are eligible to enroll in the Savings Incentive Plan at the time of employment. As a participant of SIP, associates may choose to save from 2% to 20% of their pay through payroll deductions. When you join, you have the option to contribute 401K Contributions, After-Tax Contributions, or both. 401K Contributions are made with before-tax dollars. 401K reduces your taxable income and lowers your taxes similar to an IRA. After-Tax Contributions are made with after-tax dollars. That means your savings go into the plan after federal, state, and local taxes are paid. As an added benefit, BD matches 50% of the first 6% you contribute to the plan. Newly hired regular full-time and part-time associates may be eligible to roll their prior plan's distribution into the BD Savings Plan.
Scholarship Program
The Becton, Dickinson and Company Academic Scholarship Program makes available twelve scholarships, each providing awards of $3,000 per year for a total of $12,000 over a four-year period.
The Academic Scholarship Program is based on scholastic and extracurricular activities and not on financial needs. It is available to the dependent children of all eligible BD associates, and reflects the continuing desire of BD to support higher education.
Stock Options
Consistent with the goal of increasing associate ownership, the Company's exempt level associates are eligible for BD stock option consideration. Selection criteria is based on performance and contribution levels; stock option grants are re-earned each year by meeting or exceeding challenging performance and contribution goals and expectations.
Survivor Support
Survivor Support has been established to help associates with the difficult time following the death of a loved one or after diagnosis of a terminal illness. This voluntary, personalized financial counseling program is provided at no cost to the associate.
Vacation Policy
Vacation benefits are earned on a monthly basis. The total annual vacation hours are advanced on January 1st of each year. Vacation entitlement is managed by each location.
Vision Plan
The vision plan offers coverage on eyecare needs including: eye exams, frames, lenses and contacts, regardless of your medical plan choice. The routine examination only plan is provided at no cost to the associate, there is a cost sharing arrangement for the materials buy-up plan. You must participate in a BD sponsored medical plan to be enrolled in the Vision Plan.
Workers' Compensation (non-contributory)
BD provides workers' compensation insurance coverage as required by law, to protect associates who may become ill or injured on the job. This provides medical and surgical treatment in addition to partial wage replacement for loss of earnings that result from work-related illness or injuries.
