Becton Dickinson Selected by IndustryWeek Magazine as One of the World's 100 Best-Managed Companies

Franklin Lakes, NJ (August 14, 1998) -- Becton Dickinson is on the third annual list of IndustryWeek's 100 Best-Managed Companies.

Candidates for IndustryWeek's 100 Best-Managed Companies were chosen by IW editors from the IndustryWeek 1000, a list of the world's largest publicly held manufacturing companies released in June. Two companies of the Dun & Bradstreet Corp. - Dun & Bradstreet and Moody's Investors Service - supplied the data for the IW 1000.

The 100 Best-Managed Companies were selected after a four-step process: analysis of the company's financial performance; review of a questionnaire mailed to each IW 1000 company; research into each company's practices in areas such as philanthropy and safety; and voting by a panel of more than 80 business leaders, analysts, and academicians from around the world.

"This award is an excellent demonstration of our company's progress toward becoming a high performance organization on the forefront of innovative management practices," said Clateo Castellini.

"IndustryWeek's 100 Best-Managed Companies demonstrate superior, consistent management performance, in good times and bad," said John Brandt, editor-in-chief of IW. "These awards also recognize companies that are positioning themselves for the future by investing heavily in such areas as change, market development, people, and society."

Twenty-one companies, including Becton Dickinson, appear on the list for the first time; 15 companies appear for the second time; and 64 companies have made the list each year. Twelve countries are represented on the list: the United States (72 companies), the United Kingdom (7), Japan (6), Germany (3), Canada (2), Finland (2), France (2) Mexico (2), Sweden (1), Switzerland (1), Denmark (1), and Taiwan (1).

IndustryWeek is a management magazine that helps senior executives in manufacturing and its supporting industries build, safeguard and expand the wealth of their companies. Now in its 28th year, IW has an audience of more than 800,000 readers.
