Sparks, MD USA (May 11, 1998) -- Becton Dickinson Microbiology Systems, a recognized world leader in septicemia and mycobacteria testing, has introduced another first - the new BACTEC MGIT 960 Mycobacteria Culture System. The system has just received FDA clearance, and is now available in the United States. The new BACTEC MGIT 960 features an unprecedented 960-tube capacity for throughput of up to 8000 specimens per year. It provides continuous monitoring of patient samples to identify positives as they occur, and safe, efficient, on-board incubation with no sharps as well as no need to transfer tubes once the system is loaded. The new BACTEC MGIT 960 is non-radiometric. It uses MGIT media and patented sensors to make efficient use of advanced fluorometric technology, permitting highly accurate detection of O2 consumption without sharps. The new BACTEC MGIT 960 simplifies operation with bar code scanning, convenient 4-step operation, and automated quality control. Results are provided as positive or negative. Susceptibility testing is under development.
