Franklin Lakes, NJ (December 08, 1997) -- Bridget Healy, a Becton Dickinson vice president and secretary for the corporation, signed an agreement today on behalf of the company with the Federal Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program. Representing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was Energy Star Program Manager Robert Sauchelli. Energy Star is a voluntary program that promotes pollution reduction through energy conservation using proven technologies. The agreement is similar to the Greenlights program with which the company is currently involved. Whereas Greenlights concentrates on upgrading lighting systems, Energy Star takes it a step further by encompassing all aspects of energy use within a building. Both programs aim to save energy and energy costs. Under Energy Star, Becton Dickinson’s Corporate Engineering and Technical Services Department will conduct a survey of all of its buildings nationwide and then implement energy- saving programs. Since 1995, Becton Dickinson’s involvement with Greenlights has resulted in a cost saving of $750,000 annually. Michael Diker, a Becton Dickinson engineer who is the project director for Energy Star, feels that the project fits right into the company’s values of "doing what is right"and "always seeking to improve."
"We will be able to analyze our total energy consumption on a worldwide basis instead of on a plant-by-plant basis," said Diker, "enabling us to develop energy standards that will help control the tens of millions of dollars we spend on energy each year."
