BD India (January 21, 1999) -- Becton Dickinson India Pvt. Ltd. announced today the opening of a world class manufacturing plant for making hypodermic medical devices for the Indian market. The plant has the capacity to make well over a billion disposable needles and syringes. "This state-of-the-art plant uses a highly automated process adhering to world class requirements," Managing Director of BD India, C. D. Sharma, says. "It is in keeping with BD's policy of ensuring consistent and very high quality manufacturing standards for its products."
The disposable medical devices market in India is in the process of emerging; it is still a common practice to reuse syringes in the health care industry. Recent surveys have indicated both a direct relationship between the spread of HIV and Hepatitis, and the unavailability of good quality disposable single-use products. The establishment of this fully automated BD plant will go a long way to ensure a regular supply of disposable products at affordable prices.
"Manufacturing operations in India began in Oct. '97 with manufacturing the insulin syringes," says CEO Clateo Castellini. "It gives me great pleasure to note that we are now going to manufacture hypodermic needles and syringes in India to cater to the emerging and growing needs of the Indian markets. We hope to continue bringing new technology to manufacture many more products for this market."
Eugenio Naschold, President BD Asia Pacific Region, adds, "We see a rapid growth in our operations in India. The current meltdown of the economic situation in the Southeast Asia region will be offset by the growth in India. There is a tremendous potential for our products here."
BD has had a presence in India since 1989 and was established as a fully owned subsidiary in 1995.
