Franklin Lakes, NJ (February 04, 1999) -- BD [Nyse: BDX] today announced the introduction of VACUTAINER® Brand plastic-coated micro-hematocrit capillary tubes, featuring safety-engineering to help protect health care workers from accidental injury during some of the most common medical procedures.

“Every day, health care workers perform hundreds of thousands of hematocrit determinations and sample transfers with these simple devices, in clinical laboratories, doctor’s offices, blood banks and other health care settings,” said Richard Brajer, President, Sample Collection Worldwide at BD. “Glass microbore tubes provide the dependable capillary action the professionals prefer, so we added a plastic coating to give them added protection. We take pride in products that provide the highest quality patient care and the safest possible environment for health care workers.”

Each Vacutainer Brand plastic-coated micro-hematocrit is encased in a film of MYLAR so thin that it does not interfere with the accuracy of the user’s visual inspection of the sample. However, the MYLAR layer has a very high tensile strength along with remarkable flexibility that prevent it from breaking even if the underlying glass is cracked or shattered in the course of the work. The MYLAR film will keep the pieces intact and safely contained.
