Franklin Lakes, NJ (February 02, 1999) -- BD [Nyse: BDX] today announced its launch of the MICROTAINER™ Brand Quikheel™ lancet, a gentle, safe blood-sampling device for premature infants, newborns and babies. The latest in a long line of products with safety-engineered features, the Quikheel lancet’s advanced design technology reduces the risk of injury (cuts or punctures) to the health care worker and provides a virtually pain-free incision.

“One of our biggest concerns is protecting health care workers from accidental injury while maintaining quality patient care,” said Richard Brajer, President, Sample Collection Worldwide at BD. “The state-of-the-art advanced protection technology incorporated into the QuikHeel lancet makes this device safe and non-reusable. The caregiver is never exposed to the Quikheel surgical blade, which after application is permanently retracted inside its then-disposable plastic applicator.”

After the device is pressed against the foot of the infant, the caregiver presses the trigger, deploying the blade in a smooth single action, so that it makes a small incision and then retracts in one continuous motion. This eliminates the need for safety tabs preventing inappropriate exposure of the user to the blade. Further, the extra-thin surgical steel blade produces a clean, virtually painless incision. A unique molded-spring mechanism ensures a cut of consistent depth and length for superior blood flow.
