Hepatitis C: Not an Issue but a Crisis

Dr. Robert Purcell, Hepatitis Virus Section, Laboratory of Infectious Diseases, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institute of Health, Bethesda, MD
Dr. Purcell will present the latest information on infectious etiologies andclinical presentations of hepatitis B,C, D, and E, together with the epidemiology of these infectious diseases. Dr. Purcell will also discuss vaccines for hepatitis, and the outlook for clinical treatment of hepatitis in the United States.

Dr. Robert Ball, Infectious Disease/HIV Consultant Epidemiologist, S.C. Department of Health & Environmental Control (DHEC)
Dr. Ball will focus on the cost consequences of and relative risks of occupational transmission of hepatitis C, HIV and other bloodborne pathogens. An epidemiologic basis for risk assessment and risk management for these infectious diseases will be presented using a hepatitis case study.

Dr. Murray Cohen will present an overview of current Federal policy initiatives related to protecting healthcare workers from needlestick injuries. He will review the different responsibilities and constituencies of the various Federal agencies responsible for overseeing healthcare worker safety, including FDA, NIH, CDC, NIOSH, OSHA, and EPA. He will provide tips on how to anticipate regulatory and public health actions of these agencies. Dr. Cohen will also discuss actions currently pending before the United States Congress regarding protection of healthcare workers from occupational transmission of bloodborne pathogens.
