Franklin Lakes, NJ (November 23, 1999) -- -- The Board of Directors of Becton, Dickinson and Company (“BD”) (NYSE: BDX) today announced it has named Robert M. Hallenbeck Vice President and General Counsel, effective January 1, 2000. This election follows the previously announced retirement of John W. Galiardo as General Counsel on December 31, 1999. According to Mr. Galiardo, “Bob is ideally suited to be BD General Counsel at this time in the growth of the Company. He brings to the role a solid legal perspective enhanced by a broad involvement with BD businesses, in particular his in-depth understanding of our diagnostics and bioscience technologies. Of equal importance, Bob possesses the high-level leadership skills, personal characteristics and commitment to our core values that the Company requires as we continue to strengthen performance by making greater contributions to health care customers around the world. It is a pleasure to welcome him to this key assignment.” Mr. Hallenbeck will have overall responsibility for the Company’s Law Group, Government Relations, Ethics and Business Practices, and Environmental Affairs and Safety. Mr. Hallenbeck joined BD in 1987 as a Patent Attorney, and spent six years in several roles of increasing responsibility in the Intellectual Property Department. In 1993, he was named Associate General Counsel and in February of this year, Assistant General Counsel. Mr. Hallenbeck received an undergraduate degree from St. Lawrence University. He holds a Master of Science degree in Biology and a Juris Doctor degree from Syracuse University. He is the Chair of the New York State Bar Association’s Corporate Council Section. He is also a member of the Executive Board of the Northern New Jersey Council, Boy Scouts of America. Becton Dickinson manufactures and sells a broad range of medical supplies and devices and diagnostic systems for use by health professionals, medical research institutions, industry and the general public. For the fiscal year ended September 30, 1999, Becton Dickinson reported total revenues of $3.4 billion and net income of $276 million.
