Clinton Expected to Call for Federal Agencies to Adopt Latest Techniques in Reaction to National Academy Of Sciences Recommendations
Contact: Camilla B. Jenkins BD (201) 847-5369 Franklin Lakes, NJ (December 07, 1999) -- Today, President Clinton stated he would instruct a federal task force to develop recommendations within 60 days on ways to prevent medical errors and increase patient safety. The announcement is triggered by a recent National Academy of Sciences report that estimates between 44,000 and 98,000 people die each year in U.S. hospitals as a result of a medical error -- more than from motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer or AIDS.
BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company, (NYSE: BDX)), headquartered in Franklin Lakes, NJ, has developed new systems to reduce medical errors, specifically medication errors (BD Rx System) and specimen errors (BD Dx System). Preliminary studies conducted by BD have shown that the BD Rx and Dx Systems could reduce medication and specimen errors by as much as two thirds.
The BD Rx and BD Dx Systems combine easy-to-use, handheld data terminals and bar code technology. The BD Dx System is currently employed at a Northeastern hospital. The hospital is also in the process of implementing the BD Rx System.
"BD is pleased to have developed technology that will support the continued efforts of health care institutions to prevent medical error," says Sam Riccitelli, BD vice president and general manager. "The company's new BD Rx and Dx Systems could significantly reduce medication and specimen errors and have a lasting impact on patient safety," he added.
