BD Highlights Social Responsibility in First Global Corporate Citizenship Report

Franklin Lakes, NJ (July 12, 2004) — BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (NYSE:BDX) today announced the publication of its first global corporate citizenship report. BD's "2003 Citizenship Report: Living Our Values Every Day," demonstrates the many important contributions BD is making to advance its corporate purpose of "helping all people live healthy lives."

BD's corporate citizenship report provides detailed information about the Company's policies, practices and performance relative to the social, environmental and economic impacts of its activities. The report is organized around BD's corporate values, which are the guiding force for the Company's actions: We treat each other with respect; We do what is right; We always seek to improve; and, We accept personal responsibility.

"As a medical technology company, BD is intrinsically focused on health, safety and well-being," stated Edward J. Ludwig, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. "Since our Company was founded more than 100 years ago, BD has worked from a foundation of quality, reliability and commitment to our customers and business partners around the world. With the report, we are also demonstrating our commitment to corporate responsibility and ongoing progress in our social, environmental and economic performance."

Highlights of BD's report include:

  • Community Involvement: During fiscal year 2003, BD contributed more than $4 million in cash and product donations to disaster and humanitarian relief agencies in the United States and overseas.
  • Raw Materials Recycled: BD sites measure the top raw materials recycled - both onsite and offsite. From fiscal year 2001 to 2003, the data show a significant increase in onsite recycling of major raw materials of 99 percent, and an increase in offsite recycling of 37 percent.
  • Workplace Training and Education: The principal Company program for enhancing and broadening the skills and knowledge of BD associates is BD University (BDU). Since inception, more than 7,600 associates have filled 16,500 classroom seats worldwide. BDU is unique in that the Company's Leadership Team teaches approximately 90 percent of all courses. This strongly reinforces BD as a "teaching, coaching and learning organization."
