Franklin Lakes, NJ (February 17, 2005) -- BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (NYSE:BDX), the global medical technology company, today announced the commitment of $31 million for a major expansion of its manufacturing operation in Sandy, Utah. The move is expected to bring over 40,000 square feet of new manufacturing space and an anticipated 200-300 new jobs by the time construction is completed in the Fall of 2007.

"Worldwide demand for several of BD's new safety-engineered devices is continuing to grow at attractive rates," said Michael A. Halladay, Plant Manager of BD Medical. "We could not be more pleased to be expanding in Sandy. The spirit of public-private partnership here, combined with the skilled workforce and infrastructures we depend on, have allowed us to deepen our commitment to a place that over 1,000 BD associates already call home."

The Sandy expansion is part of a $175 million coordinated development of the Company's production capacity in Utah, Nebraska and South Carolina for advanced safety-engineered devices. The Sandy facility will increase manufacturing capacity for a new BD Vacutainer® Push Button Blood Collection Set that utilizes a spring-loaded fixture. The product is designed with the specific goal of preventing needlestick injuries during the blood sample collection process by healthcare workers.

"The Push Button Blood Collection Set is one of our most advanced and innovative products, incorporating spring-based technology into our products for the first time. We were very fortunate to have a workforce that has experience with these technologies in our Sandy facility, and a skilled labor pool to draw on as we expand our capacity," added Steve Sichak, BD's Worldwide President for Preanalytical Systems. "The workforce has been integral to our success in the region, and we're excited to move forward with the next generation of workers here with this significant investment in both infrastructure and human resources."

BD's manufacturing operations in Sandy consist of both highly automated and semi-automated operations. As a world leader in catheter development, BD is at the forefront of industry with the technology and skills to operate this manufacturing equipment. Its associates are skilled individuals who work as a team: monitoring production, trouble-shooting, solving problems, and supporting computer driven equipment.

The expansion represents a major new milestone in BD's 18 years of growth in Sandy, where it is known for its volunteerism and financial support of local universities, Meals on Wheels, Project Perfect World, the Sandy City Health Fair, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Salt Lake United Way and other organizations.
