BD and North Carolina: Perfect Together

In 1897, two North Carolinians — Maxwell W. Becton and Fairleigh S. Dickinson — met by chance in Texarkana, Texas. The two medical equipment salesmen went together to New York, where the company now known as BD was founded.BD returned to North Carolina in the late 1960s, becoming one of the first large companies to build a research facility in Research Triangle Park in 1972.

BD’s second facility in North Carolina, located in Durham’s Treyburn Corporate Park, opened in 1991 and currently employs 300 associates. It produces pipets, cell inserts, tissue culture plates, dishes and roller bottles for BD Biosciences’ Discovery Labware unit.

BD Technologies established a private life sciences incubator, BD BioVenture Center, in 1999, giving 14 start-up companies access to state-of-the-art laboratories, equipment and business services and leading to the creation of 330 high-quality biotechnology jobs. All participating companies have remained in the local area and have raised over $500 million in venture capital funding, corporate partnerships and grants.
