Franklin Lakes (March 20, 2006) --
BD Medical, a segment of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (NYSE:BDX), one of the world's largest makers of diabetes care products, announced today that three-time Olympian and 10-time Olympic Medalist Gary Hall, Jr. will collaborate with BD through the 2008 Beijing Games.
“We believe in Gary Hall, Jr. and what he represents for people with diabetes,” said Bill Marshall, President, BD Medical - Diabetes Care. “He has already made a tremendous impact with our BD™ Diabetes Makeover Program and we look forward to continuing our relationship through the 2008 Summer Olympics. Gary is an inspiration for millions of people who are living with diabetes because he embodies what can be achieved when diabetes is controlled.”
Under the terms of a three-year contract, Hall will serve as a spokesperson for all BD diabetes care products and continue to play an active role in supporting BD’s efforts to help people with diabetes live healthier lives. He will make personal appearances at key events around the country, appear in print advertising and promotional materials, and continue to serve as motivational coach for the BD Diabetes Makeover Program, a national educational initiative addressing the importance of diabetes self-management.
“BD’s support through the 2008 Olympics means a lot to me. As someone living with type I diabetes, my work with BD is also very important to me,” said Gary Hall, Jr. “BD makes the diabetes care products that help me to control my diabetes. Managing my care helps me live the life I want to live and compete at a gold medal level. I recently became a user of the BD Logic® Blood Glucose Monitor - not only because it is fast, accurate and provides virtually pain free testing but also because I trust BD to provide me with the products that help me control my diabetes, and reach my full potential. I used BD products at the 2004 Olympic Games and I intend on having BD there with me in 2008.”
As part of his partnership with BD, Hall will continue to play an active role in the BD Diabetes Makeover Program.
“My diabetes is under control because I have a solid self-management plan focused on knowledge, treatment, nutrition, fitness and lifestyle,” said Hall. “The BD Diabetes Makeover Program shows that this approach can work for others. Through my continued work with the program I hope to raise awareness of the resources and tools available to people in their communities to help them better manage their disease and live healthier lives. We live in an age where – barring a cure – technology has advanced to help make the disease manageable. When you manage your diabetes, you can focus on other goals.”
BD's heritage in diabetes care began in 1922 when the first dose of insulin was delivered with a BD syringe. Today, BD provides a comprehensive line of diabetes care products ranging from lancets and blood glucose monitors to help people test their blood glucose levels quickly and easily, to insulin syringes and pen needles that make insulin injections more comfortable, to home sharps disposal containers that help people with diabetes easily and safely dispose of their supplies.
