San Jose, CA (June 12, 2008) --

BD Biosciences, a segment of BD, today celebrated the opening of a new 81,500-square foot office building and customer training facility in a ceremony today with San Jose City Mayor Chuck Reed. The building on BD’s 27-acre San Jose campus follows recognized sustainable development best practices.

“BD has thrived in Silicon Valley for 30 years, developing essential tools for life science research and clinical care. San Jose is a great center of both innovation and creativity,” said William Rhodes, President, Cell Analysis, BD Biosciences. “This new building demonstrates BD’s continued commitment to the State of California, where approximately 1,600 of our associates call home.”

BD purchased the building at 2222 Qume Drive in November 2006. The project cost more than $27 million and took nearly 12 months to completely reengineer and refurbish it.

“Congratulations to BD Biosciences for its growth in San Jose. I’m delighted to see this expansion by one of our driving industry companies,” said Mayor Chuck Reed. “As San Jose’s largest life sciences company, BD is making a significant investment in its future success with the growth of its headquarters facilities.”

BD first established a presence in California in 1959. The Company partnered with Stanford University researchers in the 1970s to develop the first fluorescence-activated cell sorter. This innovative technology led to the development of BD FACS™ brand flow cytometry systems and the birth of BD Biosciences, which now employs more than 800 people in San Jose.

The new building contains approximately 275 office spaces, which will help BD Biosciences free up space in its adjacent building to expand manufacturing capacity to meet anticipated customer demand. It also includes a 12,000-square foot state-of-the-art customer training center. This facility will allow BD Biosciences customers to learn how to operate BD’s advanced flow cytometry systems, which are the instruments of choice in research laboratories worldwide. With this expansion, the BD Biosciences campus in San Jose now has more than 400,000 square feet of office and manufacturing space.

The new building was designed to meet U.S. Green Building Council criteria for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. The Company plans to apply soon for LEED certification.
