BD Raises over £7,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support
Oxford, UK (2 March 2010) -- BD in the UK announced today that its employees helped to raise £7,251 in 2009 for Macmillan Cancer Support, BD’s preferred charity.This amount was donated in support of a Macmillan Cancer Nurse Specialist in her vital work caring for people with cancer for almost two months. BD’s most recent fundraising activity was an internal silent auction in December, which raised £1,562.BD employees from across the UK donated 20 gifts to the auction, including a Nintendo Wii console and sports package, a camera, and a karaoke machine. Other events since 2009 have included a ‘wear your pyjamas to work day’ organised by BD’s Customer Care team, and a coffee morning as part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning,’ raising an additional £689.The proceeds from these events, as well as £5,000 in donations from BD’s charitable fund, combined to make a total donation of £7,251. Macmillan Cancer Support has been BD’s preferred charity since June 2009, when BD employees were asked to which medical areas they would like to see charitable money channeled.Cancer emerged as being close to many people’s hearts, and Macmillan Cancer Support was then chosen due to the wide range of practical, medical and financial support the charity offers to help improve the lives of people living with cancer.BD is working to improve disease management by developing innovative oncology management tools that span cancer screening, diagnosis, prognosis and therapy monitoring. Etienne Borms, UK Country General Manager, BD in the UK, said: “We are very pleased to have raised this amount for Macmillan Cancer Support, which carries out amazing work, helping people with and those affected by cancer.We have enjoyed each of the fundraising events and are planning more for Macmillan in 2010.” Julian Knowles, Fundraising Manager – Oxfordshire, Macmillan Cancer Support, said: ”Macmillan Cancer Support’s ambition is to reach and improve the lives of everyone living with cancer by 2012.It’s only through the wonderful work of our supporters, like BD, that Macmillan is able to continue its vital work.” BD in Oxford is home to approximately 230 sales, marketing and technical support staff from the Company’s three segments: BD Medical, BD Diagnostics and BD Biosciences.The office also houses a team of experts from the human resources, information technology, customer service, procurement and finance departments
