When a BD manufacturing site certifies that more than 90 percent of its total plant waste stream and 94 percent of its manufacturing-related waste is diverted from landfill and recycled, the Company designates the facility as “landfill-free.” “We believe that BD’s sustainability strategy helps us turn challenges into opportunities to improve and creatively approach some of our operations,” said Stephen Sichak, BD Senior Vice President, Integrated Supply Chain. “BD continuously works to improve environmental performance in our facilities, and the Broken Bow team’s achievements are an excellent example of BD’s commitment to reducing our environment footprint.” In March 2011, the Broken Bow facility initiated a collaboration with A Greener Solution (AGS), an environmental management firm that assists corporations in developing programs to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste. Through this effort, the BD site was able to obtain “landfill-free” status. “We are extremely pleased that the Broken Bow facility is recycling nearly all of its manufacturing waste and diverting it from landfills,” said Michael Flint, Plant Manager, BD - Broken Bow. “Our local environmental team was deeply committed to achieving a 75 percent reduction in landfill waste by 2012 – a goal which they surpassed ahead of schedule.” The Broken Bow site supports the BD Diagnostics - Preanalytical Systems business and produces BD Vacutainer® tubes and urine collection products.
