Franklin Lakes, NJ (May 2, 2012) – BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a leading global medical technology company, today celebrated the grand opening of a new distribution center in Four Oaks, North Carolina that will service the Company’s East Coast customers. The $38 million facility currently employs 140 people and is expected to generate nearly 190 new jobs in Four Oaks and the surrounding communities by 2018. The new 720,000-square foot facility sits on 130 acres in the Four Oaks Business Park and is expandable to more than 1.1 million square feet.
“With our new distribution center in Four Oaks, BD is able to reduce cycle times and enhance the operational effectiveness of our entire supply chain, improving service to our customers,” said Stephen Sichak, Senior Vice President, Integrated Supply Chain and Business Systems, BD. “The area’s skilled workforce, transportation infrastructure and supportive government officials were instrumental in BD’s decision to open another North Carolina facility.”
Designed to minimize its environmental impact, the Four Oaks site is the Company’s first distribution center to be awarded LEED Gold Certification, making it BD’s eighth LEED-certified facility. Four acres of solar panels cover nearly a quarter of the total roof area and are expected to supply almost 20% of the site’s electricity. An online tracking system measures electricity generation and associated CO2 savings, along with onsite weather conditions. The roof is also a light-reflecting cool roof, which keeps the building’s internal temperatures down and lowers utility costs.
Among the facility’s many green features, its offices and the break room are equipped with skylights that use solar-powered GPS technology and mirrors to track the sunlight, channeling it into the building and largely eliminating the need for artificial lighting in these areas. In addition, all external offices are fitted with glass partitions to maximize the use of natural light across the office.
BD currently employs approximately 900 associates in North Carolina, at: BD Technologies in Research Triangle Park; BD Biosciences in Durham; and BD Diagnostics in Burlington, Research Triangle Park and Mebane. BD is also developing a BD Medical facility in Wilson.
