Product Summary:

Media containing V-C-N Inhibitor, e.g., Thayer-Martin Selective Agar,1 are used for isolation of pathogenic Neisseria from the throat, vagina, rectum or urethra.1-3 Not only is the overgrowth of gonococci and meningococci by contaminants minimized, but the "saphrophytic" Neisseria species are almost completely suppressed.

Martin et al. modified Thayer-Martin Selective Agar by adding trimethoprim to produce Transgrow Medium in bottles with a carbon dioxide-enriched atmosphere and Modified Thayer-Martin Agar in plates.4,5 A significantly greater number of positive gonococcal isolates from clinical specimens was reported as compared with Thayer-Martin Selective Agar due to the inhibition of swarming Proteus species.5-7 Because of its improved performance, it is recommended over earlier formulations for the isolation of N. gonorrhoeae.8-10

User Quality Control:

Examine lyophilized and reconstituted supplement for signs of deterioration. Check performance of the finished medium by inoculation with pure cultures of stable control organisms, producing known, desired reactions. The following cultures are recommended:

Thayer-Martin Agar

Neisseria gonorrhoeae, ATCC® 43069
Staphylococcus epidermidis, ATCC 12228
Growth
Inhibition (partial)

Modified Thayer-Martin Agar and Transgrow Medium with Trimethoprim
In addition to the cultures listed above:

Proteus mirabilis, ATCC 43071 Inhibition (partial)
