Listeria Selective Supplement is an antimicrobial supplement for addition to basal media for the selective isolation of Listeria monocytogenes, e.g., LPM Agar Base and Oxford Agar Base, Modified.

L. monocytogenes is the etiologic agent for a variety of animal and human infections.¹ L. monocytogenes has also been implicated in outbreaks of human listeriosis in which the vehicle of infection was milk.² Various foods have served as sources of Listeria in epidemics of listeriosis.³

LPM Agar was developed by Lee and McClain⁴ as a modification of McBride Agar for the isolation of L. monocytogenes. Oxford Agar Base, Modified⁵ is a modification of the Oxford Listeria selective medium developed by Curtis et al.⁶ The selective supplement contains the antimicrobial agent, moxalactam. When the selective supplement is added to these basal media, the complete media are suitable for use in the isolation of L. monocytogenes, particularly from beef⁴ and processed meat and poultry products.⁵

Examine the reconstituted supplement as described under "Product Deterioration." Check performance of the finished medium by inoculation with pure cultures of stable control organisms. The following cultures are recommended:
