BBL™ DrySlide™ Oxidase is used for determining the oxidase reaction of bacteria.
The oxidase test is a qualitative procedure for determining the presence or absence of cytochrome c oxidase activity in bacteria. This activity is dependent on the presence of an intracellular cytochrome oxidase system that catalyzes the oxidation of cytochrome c by molecular oxygen, which then serves as the terminal electron acceptor in the organism's electron transport system.1
Organisms containing cytochrome c as part of their respiratory chain are oxidase positive and turn the reagent purple; organisms lacking cytochrome c as part of their respiratory chain do not oxidize the reagent, leaving it colorless within the time limits of the test, and are oxidase negative.
Identity Specifications — 2" x 2" slides with four reaction areas. The slides are contained in foil pouches. Reaction area should be white paper with no blue tint. Each pouch contains 3 slides.
Performance Response — Perform the oxidase test following the above procedure with the test organisms listed below.
| Organism | ATCC™ | Oxidase Reaction | Color Response |
| Escherichia coli | 25922 | – | Colorless (no change) to gray |
| Neisseria sicca | 9913 | + | Dark purple |
| Pseudomonas aeruginosa | 27853 | + | Dark purple |
Quality control requirements must be performed in accordance with applicable local, state and/or federal regulations or accreditation requirements and your laboratory's standard Quality Control procedures. It is recommended that the user refer to pertinent NCCLS guidance and CLIA regulations for appropriate Quality Control practices.
BBL DrySlide Oxidase is a disposable slide having four filter paper reaction areas containing N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride and ascorbic acid as a reducing agent and stabilizer.
For in vitro Diagnostic Use.
Handle BBL DrySlide Oxidase only by the slide mount. Do not touch the reaction area.
Follow established laboratory procedures in handling and disposing of infectious materials.
