BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a leading global medical technology company, today held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new state-of-the-art prefillable syringe manufacturing facility in Tatabánya, Hungary. The 100 million € capital investment project is expected to generate approximately 500 new jobs in Tatabánya and the surrounding communities in the next six years.

The manufacturing facility is being built to meet growing worldwide demand for prefillable syringes that are sold to pharmaceutical companies, which then place the medication in the syringe. It has been found that injectable drugs sold in prefilled syringe formats reduce the potential for medication error and contamination while providing pharmaceutical companies with a means to differentiate their products.

"We chose Hungary because of its proximity to the markets these products will serve, as well as its pool of educated workers, the availability of qualified subcontractors, and an exceptional work ethic," said Alexandre Conroy, President, BD Medical - Pharmaceutical Systems.

The new facility is being constructed on the site of the TatabányaIndustrial Park, one of Hungary's first and largest industrial parks.Construction is expected to be completed in mid- to late 2009, with production expected to begin in 2010.

Conroy added, "BD worked with local, regional and national officials to bring this facility to Tatabánya. We are grateful for the efforts of all who supported this project, and we look forward to being part of this community for the long term."
