Immunization

Today, more and more children around the globe are being given a chance to live a long and healthy life. That's because worldwide immunization efforts continue to target those at risk early enough to help prevent disease.

BD firmly believes that all children have the right to safe vaccination and has committed resources to ensuring that this right can be achieved…in every country, city, and village around the world.

Safe Injection Practice

As the world's leading manufacturer of injection products, BD is committed to their safe use and disposal. Infectious complications of unsafe injection practice include the transmission of blood-borne pathogens such as Hepatitis-B, Hepatitis-C and the virus which causes AIDS (HIV). The use of non-sterile equipment for injections also leads to other infections, such as abscesses and septicemia.

Unsafe injections can result from using improperly sterilized reusable syringes, using disposable syringes more than once, and/or improperly disposing of used syringes.

For safe injection, it is important to select the appropriate injection technology, provide effective training and education of health-care workers, have an uninterrupted supply of injection products, and have a sufficient budget for supply and disposal of injection devices.

For more information on safe injection practice, visit the WHO Safe Injection Global Network (SIGN).

BD Products

To help prevent inappropriate reuse of disposable syringes and needles, BD developed several auto-disable products in close collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and several other international agencies. The WHO defines "auto-disable" syringes as syringes, which automatically are rendered unusable after having delivered a prescribed dose of vaccine. These devices include products such as the BD SoloShot™ syringe and BD UniJect™ pre-fill injection device.

BD products are designed and tested to meet high standards, including ISO, CE, and WHO certification. BD SoloShot and BD UniJect field trials in actual Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) usage situations concluded that these BD products are preferred over conventional syringes because they are highly effective in preventing reuse, can be used safely by vaccinators regardless of past experience or training, and are quicker to use than conventional syringes.
