BD has been a major contributor in the health care industry since 1956 when local entrepreneurs in Salt Lake City, Utah, formed Deseret Pharmaceutical Company, Inc. as a regional distributor of pharmaceutical products.
- In 1957, Deseret introduced the Intracath® central venous catheter, the first sterile disposable device designed for a single use.
- In 1964, the Angiocath® peripheral I.V. catheter was introduced and quickly became the leading product of Deseret Pharmaceutical and set the industry standard for two decades.
- The Angio-Set® integrated I.V. catheter was brought to the market in 1979. This product and the addition of Intima and Saf-T-Intima line extensions continue to be the only products on the market that include an I.V. catheter, pre-attached extension tubing and a PRN adapter, making them complete systems.
- In 1986, after being acquired first by Warner-Lambert Company and then by Becton, Dickinson and Company, Infusion Therapy Systems launched the BD Insyte® I.V. catheter made with Vialon®, a proprietary biomaterial developed specifically for vascular access. The result of over a decade of research, Vialon® is clinically proven to enhance patient and clinical outcomes.
- In 1994 and 1995 respectively, the BD Saf-T-Intima™ integrated I.V. catheter system with needle shield and the BD Insyte® AutoGuard™ shielded I.V. catheter were introduced.
- In 1996, BD Persist™ PVP iodine/alcohol prep swab was introduced. A fast-drying (30 seconds) one-step prep, the BD Persist ™ swab is a cost-effective approach to infection control.
- In 1996 and 1997 respectively, the BD first PICC™ peripherally inserted central catheter and BD first MidCath™ midline catheters were launched.
- In April 1998, the Medical Device Division of Ohmeda was purchased from the BOC Group, broadening the product offering to include additional infusion therapy products as well as critical care products. With the acquisition, global presence was expanded making BD the World's leading manufacturer of infusion therapy products.
- In November 1998, the BD PosiFlow™ I.V. access system, a needleless infusion valve featuring exclusive anti-reflux technology, was introduced.
Supporting the Sandy, Utah, manufacturing facility are plants in Helsingborg, Sweden; Nogales, Mexico; Plattling, Germany; San Agustin, Spain; Singapore; Swindon, UK; and Suzhou, China. All facilities have earned ISO 9001 certification except for the new Suzhou facility, which is currently undergoing the certification process.
