Valve with Positive Displacement

There are numerous types of injection sites being used today, but all valves are not created equal. There are valves on the market that, although needleless, cannot claim that they can assist you with the challenges of occluded catheters.

What is Catheter Maintenance?

Catheter maintenance assists in maintaining catheter patency until the IV therapy process is complete.

Catheter maintenance includes dressing changes, catheter capping, stabilization, proper flushing techniques, regular monitoring, etc.

Proper flushing technique (positive pressure flushing) is a component of catheter maintenance that is often:

  • Technique dependent
  • Difficult to teach
  • Practiced inconsistently
  • Difficult to perform with luer activated devices

Because of the challenges of positive pressure flushing, new valve technologies have been introduced that automatically reverse the fluid reflux associated with conventional valves.

The BD Posiflow IV Access System is a new technology designed to maintain positive pressure and prevent backflow during the flush / syringe disconnect. Its positive displacement benefits may:

  • Minimize blood exposure while reducing the chance of clots forming in the catheter
  • Allow for needleless, direct blood draws, including the use of BD Vacutainer Blood Collection Systems
  • Provide faster and easier drug delivery with the vial adapter, Y-site adapter or extension set
