BD Initiatives in the United States

Diabetes Statistics in the United States

  • Affects 20.8 million* people
  • Third highest prevalence of diabetes globally
  • 6th leading cause of death*

BD's Diabetes Collaborations and Partnerships

  • American Diabetes Association (ADA)
BD and the ADA have collaborated for more than 20 years.  In 2002, BD funded the H.P. Becton Innovation Award, supporting clinical research in the areas of medical informatics in direct patient therapy, advanced methods of insulin delivery and innovative approaches to diabetes education. BD hosts an annual ADA Walk on its Franklin Lakes, NJ, campus.

  • Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)
BD’s long corporate relationship with the JDRF includes multi-year grants to support research to find a cure.  BD is also a committed partner of other JDRF fundraising initiatives.  BD’s financial contributions and participation in the JDRF Walk have helped advance the foundation’s mission to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through research. Associates from BD Technologies in Raleigh, NC, earned the JDRF Diamond Achievement Award when they raised more than $48,000 for the 12th Annual JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes in 2007.

  • BD sponsors Children with Diabetes, an organization which helps support families and children living with diabetes through local and regional workshops.

  • The BD Medical facility in Sandy, Utah, participated in a 24-month Workplace Prevention Program to help reduce the incidence of diabetes.   A research abstract appeared in the September 2006 volume of the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) Journal detailing the program and its success.

  • Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation (HUMC)
Recognizing growing healthcare demands for patients with diabetes and other common chronic illnesses, HUMC is meeting those needs through the Institute for Clinically Effective Care.  BD committed to a three-year grant with HUMC, totaling $300,000.  The Institute's initial emphasis is on the effectiveness of diabetes care, through activities to improve glycemic control for patients.  BD's support has enabled the Institute to improve the quality of care provided to patients with diabetes.

Diabetes Camps

  • BD supports more than 22,000 children who attend 130 diabetes camps across the United States each summer with injection and testing supplies.
