BD’s Hope for a Healthy World Photo Competition once again offered photographers the opportunity to tell stories using imagery on a wide variety of global health topics. The winners’ work becomes part of a traveling photo gallery used to raise awareness and influence opinion on important health-related issues. The gallery will debut at the LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph, June 7-9, 2012 in Charlottesville, VA.
This year, Ukranian photographer Maxim Dondyuk took First Prize in the “Best Global Health Story,” category for his work on tuberculosis in Ukraine. Well-known photographer Brent Stirton received Honorable Mention for his powerful essay on HIV in that same country.
For “Best Global Health Image,” Benn Depp won for his photo of a Haitian man on the road to recovery from cholera, which is so often deadly. The “Single Image” Honorable Mention went to Fauzan Ijazah for his colorful portrayal of a hand-washing demonstration titled “Hygiene Promotion.”
There was a multimedia category again this year, and the winners were Ami Vitale and Lauren Malkani for their production depicting the immense risk that comes with childbirth in the country of Sierra Leone.
The judges for this year’s Competition were David Griffin, Visuals Editor at the Washington Post, who for many years worked in a similar role at National Geographic; Jon Jones, Photo Editor at Sunday TIMES, UK; Laara Matsen, Photo Editor D2 Magazine; Kira Pollack, Director of Photography at TIME Magazine; Marcel Saba, Director Redux Pictures.

Ben Depp, Winner: Best Global Health Image. Pierre Belizaire being treated for cholera in Haiti. Depp’s photo, along with others, attempt to make the public aware that the situation in Haiti continues to be of great concern, made worse by poor water and sanitation and a strained public health infrastructure.



Ami Vitale and Lauren Malkani, Best Global Health Multimedia. Sierra Leone has among the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, where in 2009 it is estimated that one in eight women died during pregnancy.
