Highlights of 2007 Awards and Recognitions

Throughout the world, BD continues to be recognized as an outstanding corporate citizen and a great place to work. We are pleased to share some examples of honors and recognitions received by various BD facilities and locations in 2007.

Corporate Awards

FORTUNE’s “America’s Most Admired Companies®”: In 2007, BD ranked second in the Medical Products and Equipment category. BD received the industry’s top ranking in four of the eight key attributes of reputation: social responsibility, quality of management, financial soundness and quality of products and services.

For the second consecutive year, BD has been selected as a component of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World). BD's inclusion in the Index resulted from an annual analysis of corporate sustainability leadership around the world. This assessment examined corporate economic, environmental and social performance, with a strong focus on long-term shareholder value. Results influence the investment decisions of asset managers who utilize the DJSI family of indexes. Inclusion in the DJSI World puts BD in the top 10% of the companies assessed in the healthcare sector for sustainability leadership. BD also remains on the 120-company DJSI North America Index for the third consecutive year.

BD is also a member of the FTSE4Good index series, an innovative series of real-time indices designed to reflect the performance of socially responsible equities. A committee of independent practitioners in socially responsible investment and corporate social responsibility review the FTSE4Good indices to ensure that they are an accurate reflection of current CSR best practice.

In May 2007, BD was named one of the “World’s Most Ethical Companies” by Ethisphere Magazine. The Magazine analyzed over 5,000 companies to determine which go beyond making statements about doing business “ethically” and translate those words into action. Winners demonstrate real and sustained ethical leadership within their industries. BD was also designated as “Ethics Inside Certified,” which recognizes a select number of companies that provided direct evidence to demonstrate adequate internal efforts to promote ethical behavior by associates.

Environmental

In November 2007, the BD manufacturing facility in Plymouth, UK, received the Devon Environmental Business Initiative Low Carbon Award 2007 for reducing its carbon footprint. In the last year, the site cut carbon emissions by 1,345 tons and saved about £250,000 on utility bills. The facility aims to reduce this by another 4 to 5 percent in the next year and then another 2 percent every year thereafter.
In 2007, the BD plant in Dún Laoghaire, Ireland, was honored as the "Best Example of Energy Management" at the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown (DLR) Chamber’s EnviroCom 2007 Awards. These awards recognize businesses and agencies operating within Dublin County for their efforts to safeguard the environment.

Health / Safety

In September 2007, the BD plant in Yishun, Singapore, was honored with two 2007 Singapore HR Awards, the country’s most prestigious Human Resources best practices awards. The awards for Health & Employee Wellness and Workplace Safety & Health recognized the plant’s innovative approach to incorporating workplace safety and employee wellness into the business’s continuity management platform. This wellness program was highlighted as a case study at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting in January 2008.

Learning

In 2007, the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD) honored BD University with its 2007 BEST Award, which recognizes organizations that demonstrate enterprise-wide success as a result of associate learning and development. BD’s “leaders-as-teachers” associate training program ranked fourth out of the 42 ASTD BEST Award winners. The program was featured in the October 2007 issue of T+D magazine.

Top Employers

Among the many “best employer” awards BD received in 2007 are the following:

BD in Canada was named a “Top 50 Employer in the Greater Toronto Area” by Mediacorp Canada, Inc., a Toronto publisher. This competition included more than 60,000 employers across Canada.

BD in Germany (Heidelberg) was ranked among the 100 best employers of mid-sized companies by the German “Top Job” initiative. BD in Germany was recognized for its leadership and vision, motivation and dynamics, culture and communication, employee development and perspective, family and social orientation and internal entrepreneurship. BD in India was selected as one of the “Top 25 Best Employers in India 2007 Hewitt Study.” A group of 230 participating organizations were ranked on criteria such as: employee engagement, opportunities provided to employee development, diversity, quality of human resources initiatives and performance differentiation. BD in India ranked 18th in the survey, leading the healthcare industry.

BD in New Jersey: For the third consecutive year, NJBIZ magazine named BD as one of the “Best Places to Work in New Jersey” for companies with more than 200 employees.
