Direct Relief Prepares for the 2010 Hurricane Season
BD contributed medical supplies necessary for those with chronic health diseases such as diabetes, asthma and hypertension as part of Direct Relief’s program to prepare for the 2010 hurricane season in the U.S. Gulf States, Central America, Haiti and other Caribbean countries.

Gulf Oil Spill: Direct Relief and BD Helping to Save Marine Mammals
In response to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, BD donated over 30,000 syringes to Direct Relief to feed and medicate the affected animals.
BD and Direct Relief created a program to help people with insulin-dependent diabetes who have been affected by the current economic situation. BD pledged to donate 5 million syringes to more than 1,000 community health center and free clinic partners nationwide.
BD and Direct Relief launched their second volunteer service trip to improve healthcare in Ghana. A team of 13 BD associates went to Ghana for three weeks to improve the region’s ability to provide basic healthcare services for its people.

BD and Direct Relief have had an ongoing relationship for the past ten years in which they have helped people in developing countries by providing needed medical supplies. Since 2007, BD has sent some of its associates to improve medical care in Ghana first-hand.

Direct Relief mentioned BD in its program to provide diabetes insulin products to people diagnosed with diabetes that were affected by the economic crisis that struck the U.S. Direct Relief also acknowledged the Volunteer Service Trip Program in Ghana which has been going on since 2007.

Direct Relief acknowledged the Ghana Volunteer Project, where BD volunteers worked with Direct Relief-supported clinics in Ghana to improve healthcare worker safety at the Maranatha Maternity and Motoka clinics.

BD donated and shipped 1.2 million auto-disable syringes to IMA’s comprehensive health projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo in addition to its previous donation in 2008.

JDRF and BD Collaborate to Improve Insulin Pump Delivery
BD and JDRF announced a program aimed at improving the treatment of type 1 diabetes by developing insulin delivery products to enhance the use of insulin pumps. Through this program, JDRF agreed to support BD’s research and development of new products for insulin patients.
JDRF acknowledges its corporate partnership with BD. Through its success in diabetes technology, BD has helped to develop quality products to assist those patients with diabetes, as well as be a sponsor of JDRF’s mission.

BD and PEPFAR have partnered with the Kenya Ministry of Health to train clinicians to safely collect and handle blood in order to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.

This ongoing initiative applies BD’s knowledge, expertise and resources to expand and improve healthcare systems, build local capacity and improve patient care. BD associates have volunteered to conduct lab strengthening activities in sub-Saharan Africa since 2008.

BD Applauds PEPFAR’s Broadened Emphasis on Strengthening Health Systems
BD recognized PEPFAR’s recent increased involvement over the next five years on strengthening healthcare systems in developing countries.
BD is working with PEPFAR to train and mentor technicians in third-world countries who can then service CD4 machines that are important to the treatment of HIV/AIDS.
BD and PEPFAR collaborated to make significant progress in improving lab conditions and enhancing the skills of lab personnel in the battle against HIV/AIDS and TB in sub-Saharan Africa. This collaboration is valued at up to $18 million.

Project HOPE honored for Dominican Republic aid
BD and Project HOPE were honored for their donation and aid to the Dominican Republic after the 2007 tropical storms that had struck the area. BD donated a significant amount of products in aid.

BD, NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo and UNICEF launched two Centers of Excellence: an Immune System Monitoring Laboratory and an Occupational Safety Centre for Health Workers. The safety center will train more than 200 clinicians while the new laboratory will improve monitoring and treatment of patients living with HIV/AIDS.

BD Extends Decade-Long Support for UNICEF’s Campaign to Eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus
On Mother’s Day, BD announced its continued support to UNICEF for its campaign to vaccinate mothers and children in developing countries against maternal and neonatal tetanus.
Gary Cohen (Board Director of the CDC Foundation and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, and Executive VP of BD) and initiative partners are working together to expand surveillance of sexual violence against girls, develop packages of intervention and prepare and launch a major media campaign to promote awareness.

UNICEF and BD Work to Make Global Measles Deaths Drop by 78 percent
The Measles Initiative, which considers BD to be one of its key partners, has announced a warning about the resurgence of measles and urged countries to continue vaccination campaigns to continue the decrease in deaths.
