3.4 - BD Phoenix™     3.4 - BD Phoenix™

The BD Phoenix™ Automated Microbiology System , with its unique technology for susceptibility testing, provides high accuracy combined with rapid time to result. Because MRSA, VRE and Extended Spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) are the most important resistance markers linked to HAIs, the performance of the laboratory’s ID-AST system to detect these mechanisms is critical.

The Answer You Need Today From a Single Test Result

Assay Features

  • Performance comparable to the "gold standard" cytotoxicity assay
  • Real-time PCR results in <2 hours for toxigenic C. difficile
  • Specific detection of the tcdB gene found only in toxigenic C. difficile
  • One single method that can replace current C. difficile testing

Clinical Advantages

  • Rapid, sensitive and specific results for patients suspected of having C. difficile infection (CDI)
  • Earlier accurate diagnosis enables appropriate treatment of infected patients and can help avoid empiric treatment and unnecessary exposure to antibiotics in negative patients
  • Facilitates targeted infection control practices to prevent transmission and infection.

Assay Features:

  • Rapid, simultaneous detection and differentiation of MRSA and SA direct from positive blood culture bottles, wounds and nasal specimens.
  • Results in less than 2 hours vs. 2-3 days required for traditional microbiology culture methods
  • Simple user-friendly workflow
  • Aids in the differentiation of MRSA/SA and potential contaminants such as coagulase negative Staphylococcus.

Clinical Advantages:

  • Rapid identification and treatment of BSIs has been proven to reduce healthcare costs and improve patient outcomes
  • Promotes faster, better antibiotic selection to prevent the emergence of vancomycin resistant organisms
  • Facilitates earlier isolation of patients infected with MRSA to prevent further transmission and infection

3.5 - BD MAX™     3.5 - BD MAX™

A revolution in molecular biology

The new BD MAX™ is the first fully-automated open molecular biology platform allowing the use of multiple specimen types and assays simultaneously.

The Jaguar™ platform, initially developed by HandyLab, has now been commercialised by BD as the BD MAX™ system. This new generation in automation brings simple, flexible performance to molecular biology testing.

The BD MAX™ system integrates all molecular testing workflow onto a single automated platform: cell lysis, DNA/RNA extraction, DNA amplification by real-time PCR, and detection. Adapted for laboratories of all sizes, the BD MAX™ system reduces cost and complexity of molecular biology procedures.

  • Minimal hands-on time
  • Simplification of molecular biological methods
  • No specialist training required

One flexible, comprehensive platform.

  • Unitised reagent strips for 1 to 24 samples per run
  • Up to 144 tests per day (38 000 tests a year)
  • Extraction from multiple specimen types (blood, urine, swabs, etc.)
  • Ability to run multiple tests simultaneously (e.g. testing for S. aureus and Group B Streptotoccus at the same time)

  • DNA is extracted and purified to a high standard (20 ul)
  • Rapid results: 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the number of samples analysed
  • Excellent limit of detection
  • CE marked

An Open System

The BD MAX™ platform is an open system which allows laboratories to use in-house-developed tests and other commercial tests with their own probes and primers, in addition to those developed by BD.

Unitised Reagent Strips

All the reagents necessary for cell lysis, nucleic acid extraction, amplification and detection are contained in unitised reagent strips: pipette tips, lysis enzymes, extraction reagents, magnetic beads, master mix, probes, primers and internal control.

  • Unitised reagent strips for ease of use
  • Contains all reagents ready-to-use
  • Room-temperature storage
  • Individual 2D barcodes guarantee quality and traceability of reagents

Amplification takes place in micro-fluidic PCR cartridges consisting of 12 reaction chambers

  • Each chamber has individual parameters, which allows the application of different PCR protocols in the same cartridge.
  • Rapid thermal cycling
  • Reaction chambers are sealed before nucleic acid amplification to avoid amplicon contamination.
