    BD Innova: Spreading Laboratory Efficiency

The result of a partnership between BD and Dynacon, the BD Innova™ is the first robot of a second generation dedicated to spreading laboratory efficiency. 

With its unique design, it allows: 
• No extra consumables for a reduced operating cost 
• Compatibility with a broad range of containers without an adapter 
• The choice of inoculation with loop or pipette
• Random loading for better sample management 
• Fully automated one-hour run
• A closed system to avoid contamination 
 

The culture media are loaded into one of six racks of carousel: 
• Up to 270 plates can be loaded at the same time
• Up to 200 specimens can be loaded at the same time
• Compatible with any type of 90 mm plate 
• Works with bi-plates and whole plates
• Up to 180 plates per hour processed in streak only mode

• Depending on specimen type and streak pattern, up to 140 plates per hour in liquid mode

 

 

The BD Innova™ has 5 drawers for loading of samples. Each drawer is equipped with patented universal “canoe” rack (which can hold containers between 1.2 and 4.5 cm diameter). 

The maximum capacity of the machine is 200 samples, representing 40 per drawer. 

The drawers are completely independent of each other, allowing loading of samples in one drawer while the robot processes samples from another drawer. This not only reduces down-time through continuous loading of the machine, but also enables easy inclusion of emergency samples into the workflow. 

 

The BD Innova™ accepts all types of containers commonly used in microbiology, and is able to cope with many different closure types. 

 

At the start of the run, the bar code of the first sample is read by the machine to determine the inoculation protocol to use.

The sample is then shaken, and opened automatically. The robot arm is capable of opening containers with or without screw-caps and various diameters, without any accessories to change, thanks to its universal de-capper. 

So there is no down-time during the process of sample handling, and machine is capable of samples in series (same type of samples) or mixed samples. 

Once the plate has been inoculated, the robot automatically re-closes the container with its original cap. 

This automatic opening and closing of samples:
• Frees up microbiologists’ time
• Works with all types of containers
• Only one container open at a time to minimize cross contamination 
• Thus exposure risks are minimized to provide a safe working environment for your staff 
 

The BD Innova™ operates as a completely closed system. The instrument is equipped with an internal compressor and a HEPA air filtration system which re-circulates the air in the machine. The doors are locked during operation. If access is required, the machine is paused and the air is filtered for several cycles in order to open the machine safely. 
 

 

• No technical requirements for installation – just plugs in to a normal socket.
• Reduces risk to personnel 

Spreading of plates is done with a loop to replicate the technique of technicians. 
After spreading, the loop is sterilised at ultra-high temperature then cooled before reuse. 
No consumables are therefore required for the spreading of plates with this technique. 
3 loop diameter sizes are available: 1 μl, 10 μl, 30 μl. The instrument is able to manage two different loop diameters simultaneously. 

 

 

 

The BD Innova™ has a large library of streaking patterns, to meet the specific needs of laboratories and to preserve continuity. It is also possible to program specific streak patterns.

 

 

 

 

The BD Innova™ is able to work fully automated (walk-away time) for up to two hours without intervention, freeing up valuable technician time which can then be re-allocated to value-added tasks. 

During all processes, full traceability of samples is ensured by barcode and bidirectional LIS interface. 

A second barcode is applied to the plates after spreading, to ensure full traceability. 
It contains information on the job number, date and time. 
Additional information such as patient name, age, sex, type of analysis, etc. can be added if required. 

 

Throughout the process, control is assured with 5 cameras and ultrasound sensing of sample levels, as well as safety sensors for the positions of moving parts - ensuring smooth operation of the machine. 

The BD Innova™ has a simple user interface and user-friendly operation of all machine functions. 

Via the bidirectional LIS interface the Innova can be connected to the laboratory information system
