BD PrepStain™ Slide Processor

In the laboratory, the processing and staining module, formerly known as AutoCyte PREP®, is now called the BD PrepStain™ Slide Processor. The BD PrepStain™ Slide Processor is the only single system available for both the preparation and staining of cervical cytology samples.
Combining advanced robotics with application-specific protocols, preservatives, preparation fluids, and stains for both gynecologic and non-gynecologic applications in the modern cytology laboratory.
The BD SurePath™ Slide
The BD PrepStain™ process results in a highly optimized BD SurePath™ slide preparation consisting of a discretely stained 13mm thin-layer of cells. Cell distribution is uniform, homogeneous, and represents the entire specimen.

Four Simple Steps ...
1.	Liquid-Based Sample Collection A cervical sample is collected. The tip of the collection device is separated from the stem and dropped into BD SurePath™ ethanol-based preservative fluid, capturing and preserving 100% of the collected patient sample and eliminating any potential air drying artifacts. The sample vial is capped, labeled and sent off to the lab.
2.	BD SurePath™ Cell Enrichment Process At the laboratory, samples are pre-processed in batches up to 48 at a time. The cell enrichment process combines gravity dispersion and centrifugation to separate obscuring blood, mucus, inflammation and other debris from diagnostic material, creating an enriched cellular sample.
3.	Automated Cell to Slide Transfer Up to 48 samples are loaded onto the BD PrepStain™ system for completely automated processing and staining of the samples. BD PrepStain™ Slide Processor creates a consistent preparation with enhanced concentration of diagnostic cells for easier screening.
4.	Completely Automated Staining Upon completion of a uniform thin-layer on the slide, BD PrepStain™ Slide Processor continues the process with on-board EA/OG and Hematoxylin stains. Precision automation provides a consistent stain for each slide.

Conventional

The conventional smear, dense with blood, mucus, and inflammation is diagnosed as an unsatisfactory specimen, and the patient is called back in for another sample.

BD SurePath™ Slide

The same sample was processed by BD PrepStain™ slide processor, which eliminated the obscuring material for a sample easily diagnosed as "within normal limits".

The conventional smear, although diagnosed as "within normal limits" can be considered "limited" with the cells hidden by excessive cell clumping.

The same sample, using residual material from the smear and processed by the BD PrepStain™ Slide Processor, allows for diagnosis with no questions.
