Technology Leadership Development Program (TLDP)

The Technology Leadership Development Program is designed for future technical leaders, with accelerated development into advanced leadership roles on both technical and managerial tracks. The participants enter an accelerated track consisting of three successively more challenging one-year rotations across multiple businesses and locations within the company. Each rotation strengthens the technical depth of these high-potential associates, while developing their leadership skills and stretching their experiences across multiple disciplines. Participants can enter the program with a Ph.D or MS degree in life science or engineering fields such as mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, microbiology, biochemistry, cell biology, and other related disciplines. Positions will be sculpted for each individual, based upon the associate’s interests and educational point-of-entry. Rotations will focus on developing each participant’s domain expertise, leadership abilities, cross-functional skills, and business acumen.

With custom-designed rotations guided by participants’ input, the program is designed to be fluid, flexible, and dynamic. A participant may rotate among multiple BD segments (BD Medical, BD Diagnostics, BD Biosciences) while developing his or her technical and leadership skills or may focus in one area of expertise and rotate through different roles, such as research, product development, and project leadership, within one business or product line. The adaptation of rotations to the individual’s skills and interests allows for a great deal of agility, and serves as a catalyst for accelerated development within the company.

Examples of first-year assignments include:

  • design and development of product components in drug delivery systems and high tech diagnostics devices,
  • contributing to the development of a novel materials technology that enables device innovation, or
  • participating in the development of new technologies that enable better and faster disease diagnostics.

Second-year assignments are more complex technically and typically include providing supervision and work direction for a small team. In the third year, the TLDP associate's leadership is further developed by increased team sizes, while the technical complexity and impact of the roles are also increased.
