Technology and Design Make a Difference in Pen Needle Comfort

When it comes to injection, the needle you use can make a big difference in how you feel. BD uses advanced technology and design to offer pen needles that provide injection comfort, needle glide, and a smooth needle finish.

How BD Needles Are Made

Needles start life as flat pieces of surgical steel that are rolled into a tube that becomes the needle on a pen needle. There are three methods used during BD’s manufacturing process to create a needle with injection comfort in mind:

1) Penta PointTM Technology: Once the steel tube (cannula) is cut to length, BD shapes the tip of the needle into a patented 5-bevel needle tip designed for even more comfort.  This 5-bevel needle tip creates a flatter thinner surface to help penetrate the skin with significantly greater ease for a smoother and gentler injection.  Penta PointTM technology will also become available on the 5mm and 8mm pen needles. 12.7mm pen needles will not be upgraded to this technology.

2) Micro-bonded lubrication: BD adds another level of comfort into its needles by adding a layer of micro-bonded lubrication. This lubrication is designed to help the needle glide into your skin more smoothly, reducing the amount of friction, or pulling force, against your skin as you inject. This lubrication is applied while the needle is actually being made.

3) Electro-polishing: The manufacturing process can create very small blemishes and rough spots on the needle that may cause pain by catching on and tearing the skin. BD uses a process that polishes the needle to a smooth finish, removing these blemishes. This finish helps to make injections comfortable.

BD designs all of these features with one result in mind – maximum injection comfort.
