It affects 529,000 women-and kills 275,000-each year, and is the third most common cancer in women globally. It's also one of the leading causes of cancer death among women in developing countries.
But in the sub-Saharan region of Africa, cervical cancer is a more formidable foe. Here, a lack of widespread access to cervical cancer diagnostic technology-paired with an urgent need to train and educate healthcare workers on fundamental cytology skills-has made it extremely difficult for women in need to get the proper care for early detection or treatment.
To complicate matters, women's diseases in this region can be stigmatized, discouraging women from seeking out proper care. As a result, cervical cancer has become the most common women's cancer in the sub-Sahara.
BD is partnering with the Pink Ribbon Red RibbonSM initiative, an innovative program focused on combating cervical and breast cancer by leveraging public and private investments in global health. The goal: to reduce cervical cancer deaths in the region by an estimated 25% among women screened and treated. To get there, Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon is working to significantly increase access to diagnosis and treatment programs and to create innovative programs that can be scaled up and used globally.
BD, for its part, will provide deeply discounted pricing on its vital cervical cancer diagnostic tests in developing and emerging countries. And in addition to much-needed education and training, BD will help develop in-country guidelines and policies for effective cervical cancer screening.
The initiative offers another opportunity for BD to leverage its technologies and expertise to enhance disease detection and patient management in women's health.
