BD Responds to Global Threat of Wuhan Coronavirus

BD supports global efforts to contain virus and care for victims

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Wuhan Coronavirus a global health emergency last week.  Since appearing in China in early December, the Wuhan coronavirus is known to have afflicted more than 40,000 people and been responsible for more than 900 deaths, primarily in China.1

At BD, we’ve been closely monitoring this emerging health threat to ensure that patients around the world will continue to have access to our medical technologies, as well as provide much needed aid to China.

Our products

BD recognizes that worldwide, hospitals, physicians, laboratories and clinics rely on our products to maintain the health of their patients. As a company with a global supply chain, we understand the importance of ensuring that we can continue to supply customers in China and around the world with the products their patients rely upon.

The vast majority of products BD manufactures in China are sold and used in China. For those products that are exported from China, BD currently has sufficient inventory of products to meet demand. Within China, imports of goods and raw materials are being received as expected, and we are sending additional products to the region that we believe will be useful in helping the Chinese healthcare system address its present needs, such as BD MAX™ systems that can be used by clinical laboratories to develop tests for coronavirus. In parallel, we continue to support health care providers around the world in their efforts to diagnose other respiratory infections, such as influenza, for which we have approved diagnostic tests.

Our aid

BD is providing support to local health organizations in China.

BD has provided product donations, including catheters, flush products, syringes, sharps, and blood collection tubes valued at approximately $300,000 to the local Red Cross in Wuhan, which will be used to outfit two new military hospitals that will accommodate coronavirus-infected patients.

BD has also provided $50,000 in cash to global health and humanitarian relief organization, Project Hope. In coordination with the Hubei Provincial Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Health Commission, the funds will be used to supply personal protective equipment (PPE) to frontline health workers of the Renmin and Zhongnan Hospitals of Wuhan University through.
