Leading Gravimetric-based Pharmacy Medication Workflow Solution, BD Cato™, Now Available with Visual Documentation Hardware (VDH) Camera

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J., April 29, 2015 – BD Medical, a segment of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (NYSE: BDX), a leading global medical technology company, announced today that its BD Cato Medication Workflow software product is now available with an optional, camera-based, visual documentation hardware. The new BD Cato VDH automatically provides visual documentation of vial, syringe and IV container information during each gravimetric step and is equipped with an embedded barcode scanner, providing an ergonomically reachable scanning zone that may reduce footprint.

Critical customer and market insights revealed the need to enable remote verification of IV admixtures while simultaneously obtaining a visual record during the preparation process. BD engineers have taken these insights and designed an innovative solution that tightly integrates and complements the enhanced safety and workflow efficiency already afforded by BD Cato’s current weight-based (gravimetric) workflow offering.

BD Cato Medication Workflow Solutions is an automated pharmacy workflow system intended to drive efficiency and cost reduction while simultaneously elevating the standard of IV compounding in the cleanroom. The software is designed to minimize the probability of dose and drug errors by intercepting them in real time, while streamlining the workflow through standardization of processes including order review, inventory picking and dose preparation. The system optimizes utilization of new and partial drug vials as well as returned admixtures to help reduce drug waste. Throughout the preparation process, documentation is automatically generated to enable analysis and improve productivity and accurate billing of medications. A robust portfolio of interfaces enable integration with pharmacy IT systems, inventory management software and billing systems to provide seamless order importing, dose queue management and inventory tracking within the preparation environment, thereby helping improve safety and efficiency.
