BD Hits Century Mark With Infusion Pump Interoperability
More than 100 Hospitals Have Implemented Interoperability for Alaris(TM) System
PR Newswire

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J., July 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (NYSE: BDX), a leading global medical technology company, today announced that more than 100 hospitals and health systems have implemented the company's electronic medical record (EMR) interoperability solutions for its Alaris(TM) System intelligent infusion pump platform.

The Alaris System with bi-directional EMR interoperability bridges the gap between a hospital's EMR and Alaris infusion pumps. With only one additional barcode scan to the nurses' barcode medication administration workflow, the system enables the pharmacist-verified physician's order to pre-populate the Alaris System, reducing manual keystrokes and infusion programming errors. BD is the only company that has hospital customer sites performing bi-directional interoperability with electronic medical records (EMRs) for both large volume pumps and syringe pumps.

"The Alaris System is a proven infusion platform with EMR connectivity used in more sites than any other infusion pump," said Mike Garrison, vice president and general manager of worldwide Infusion Solutions for BD. "Not only are we 'live' at more than 100 customer facilities, our customers have typically implemented interoperability across their whole hospital, including ambulatory centers, providing an improved continuum of care for their patients."

Alaris EMR interoperability also enables the wireless passing of data from the Alaris pumps back to the EMR, including all stops, starts, pauses and titrations. The nurse then validates the data in the EMR and commits it to the patient record, eliminating the need for manual documentation and ensuring complete and accurate infusion records.

Earlier this year, the Alaris System was named 2015 Best in KLAS for Smart Pumps by KLAS, an organization that independently monitors health care information technology performance through the active participation of thousands of health care organizations. The 2015 Best in KLAS: Medical Equipment report stated that providers believe that BD is better positioned for the future in regard to interoperability with electronic medical records (EMRs), and customers appreciate the added benefit of having patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) and syringe modules for the same pump. In addition, the report stated that consistent customer service is another advantage for BD customers, and all other large volume pump (LVP) vendors struggle more to provide support to clients.
