COLUMBUS, NE, May 14, 2014 – BD Medical, a segment of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a leading global medical technology company, has awarded $12,000 in scholarships to three local high school graduates pursuing technical degrees in high-demand fields such as electromechanical technology and precision machining.

BD Medical operates two manufacturing plants in Columbus that support BD’s Medical Surgical Systems and Pharmaceutical Systems units. The students, in turn, will commit to a two-year work assignment with BD Medical after graduation.

“BD has been an integral part of the Platte County economy since we opened manufacturing operations in Columbus in 1949,” said Shawna Hilbert, Human Resource Manager, BD Medical. “As the county’s single largest employer, we believe it is our responsibility to help build a qualified local workforce. It is in both BD’s and the community’s interests to ensure workers possess the highly specialized skills companies like BD need to grow and compete in today’s global economy.”
