Overview

Regional is recommended

The American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Pain Society and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine all recommend regional anesthesia techniques over general anesthesia when patient appropriate.

  • Superior pain relief and improvement in post-operative pain*,1-2
  • Leading to earlier, post-surgery ambulation*,1-3
  • Fewer in-hospital complications*,4
  • Shorter length of hospital stay*,5

*Compared to general anesthesia

Post-dural puncture headache–the most common serious complication6

Post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) is the most common serious complication resulting from spinal and epidural anesthesia and lumbar punctures.6 PDPH is generally thought to be the result of decreased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure due to CSF leakage through the dura puncture hole.6,7 The size and type of spinal needles are two of the most important factors for decreasing the risk of PDPH.6

Market leader in spinal needles

BD® Whitacre and BD® Quincke Spinal Needles are selected by clinicians around the world. Their hubs enable anesthesiologists to visualize CSF for proper needle placement, and the manufacturing quality, reliability and consistency of BD products gives them peace of mind.
