The BD Leadership Standard
Our leadership is crucial in shaping our purpose-driven culture. In 2014, we introduced the BD Leadership Standard to support our transformation into a more global, innovative, customer-centric and inclusive company. Among our eight leadership competencies is shared value creation, the principle that we can achieve growth and expand our relevance by addressing unmet societal needs while creating economic value. We expect our leaders to engage external experts and key opinion leaders to develop a deep understanding of areas where BD can align its core competencies to achieve positive outcomes for pressing societal issues.
For our associates around the world, employment at BD isn’t just work — it’s a chance to make a real difference in the lives of others.
As our industry evolves, the creativity, innovation and commitment of our workforce becomes ever more critical to our success.
We are committed to advancing our purpose-driven culture by:
Promoting diversity and inclusion
Ensuring a safe and healthy workplace
Creating an environment that encourages and rewards pursuit of our purpose through volunteerism
This focus ensures we make a positive impact on the communities where we live and work, and is reflected in our approach to Social Investing — combining charitable contributions with community involvement and the expertise of BD associates.

Programs & partnerships
BD University is our principle company-wide learning system for strengthening the skills and knowledge of associates. Among the various learning opportunities provided, our accelerator programs are designed for the development of high-potential associates from all BD businesses, regions and functions. We also partner with external organizations committed to the visibility, recognition, academic and professional success of women and people of ethnic diversity.
1
Increase the diversity of our workforce, particularly in leadership roles
In an era of globalization and rapidly changing demographics, it has become more important than ever to develop a deeper knowledge of the world and the needs of the markets we serve. Building a community of diverse individuals and perspectives within the company is good for our business and critical to our future.
Women & minorities
We have set goals to increase the representation of women and ethnic minorities at all levels and in all regions of our organization, and we track hires, promotions, job openings, growth of business units and resignations to measure our progress.

Primary focus
To achieve our goals for diversity and inclusion, our primary focus includes:
- Global mentoring and networking programs to drive sponsorship, retention and career development for existing associates
- Training and tools to accelerate cross-cultural work and team effectiveness in development programs at all levels
- Associate resource groups, including BD’s Women’s Initiative Network, and external partnerships with diverse professional associations and talent communities
Women’s Initiative Network (WIN)
Companies that perform best on organizational and financial measures have women strongly represented at top management levels. BD’s Women’s Initiative Network (WIN) is a global, associate-led program that supports women at all levels with the skills, knowledge and experience to help advance their careers. WIN groups hold events at the site/regional level, as well as globally coordinated events, such as celebrations for International Women’s Day.
Veterans at BD
In 2014, we launched a military-friendly job search site, allowing veterans and those on active duty to translate their military skills, experience and training into career opportunities. We also work with organizations, such as the Service Academy Career Conference, to recruit and retain veterans, and we are currently developing a U.S. Veterans Associate Resource Group to provide support for current and future employees.

Components of our safety program
Empowering our workforce to anticipate and eliminate potential hazards is the most important contributor to our safety performance. Several components of our safety program help to support this culture.
2
Achieve best-in-class associate safety performance
We are determined to further improve safety performance in everything we do, working constantly to set expectations, provide tools, measure progress and communicate results. This is an area that demands constant vigilance and strong leadership.
Safety performance
While we have done a great deal in the past year to advance our safety programs, we acknowledge a need for more communication from leadership about safety to better engage and empower our workforce.
Despite our ongoing efforts, one of our associates suffered a fatal injury this year in an accident at work. After fully investigating the circumstances that led to this tragic accident, we have taken measures to prevent such an accident from happening again. We remain committed to the safety of our associates, contractors and all those who visit our sites.

We work to integrate wellness more fully into the workplace through this program which centers on the power of prevention, educating BD associates about:
- Conditions that may affect performance
- Healthy, nutritional alternatives
- Stress management
- Smoking cessation
- Chronic condition management
- Recognizing the benefits of physical activity

Drive social impact and associate engagement through volunteer programs
Our tradition of volunteer services stretches back to our founding in 1897. We encourage associates to become involved with nonprofit groups in their local communities and on a global level, either as individuals or through BD-sponsored programs.
Associate Engagement and Volunteering
Our volunteer programs and regional fund-raising activities reflect our purpose-driven culture and the desire of our associates to contribute to well-being in the communities where we live and work.
We focus on knowledge- and skills-based volunteering, which allows associates to share their professional acumen with nonprofit groups. Through these opportunities, our associates gain valuable experience while working alongside healthcare providers and others serving people in need.
Autumn Charity Drive
As part of their Autumn Charity Drive, associates at BD’s Shared Service Center in Wroclaw, Poland, supported their local community by collecting used books for Buy a Book, a campaign held for the benefit of Wroclaw Children’s Hospice Fund. Associates also collected clothing and food for the St. Albert's Homeless Shelter and donated LEGOs to kids in Wroclaw Hospice.
Helping Our Neighbors program
Two BD manufacturing sites in Columbus, Nebraska, continued to make an impact through their “Helping Our Neighbors” program, launched in 2012. This program supports four local organizations:
- Can Care-A-Vana — Associates have collected 23,853 pounds of food since 2012, helping more than 1,000 families.
- Habitat for Humanity — BD donated nearly $20,000 to help with start-up expenses for the local chapter, and associates regularly participate in building projects.
- Relay For Life — BD Columbus received The American Cancer Society’s prestigious “Society Visionary Award” for donating more than $25,000 in one calendar year.
- United Way — BD associates have contributed more than $140,500 through payroll deductions, one-time donations and purchasing “Duck Derby” raffle tickets.
Cultural Circle of Photography
BD Brazil is supporting a program called the Cultural Circle of Photography, in partnership with "Image Magica" and the government of Sao Paulo. As part of this photography project, associates visited two large hospitals in Brazil, engaging the staff, patients and their families to take photos about “what care means to me.” Small photo albums containing the pictures and captions were then distributed among the hospital workers and patients, spreading some cheer to those involved. Over the course of the project, 300 participants provided 630 photos.
See more about the Cultural Circle of Photography >Henry P. Becton Volunteer Impact Awards
The Henry P. Becton Volunteer Impact Awards Program honors the late BD Director Henry P. Becton Sr.’s lifelong commitment to the community and BD’s legacy of community service. The program recognizes the outstanding philanthropic efforts of BD associates and retirees by making financial contributions in the winners’ names to the organizations for which they volunteer. In 2014, BD awarded $40,000 in grants to 23 nonprofit organizations around the world through the program.
Education
We’re committed to support education in the communities where we operate, particularly for those pursuing technical degrees in high-demand fields that align with our manufacturing operations. In 2014, we awarded three $4,000 scholarships to advance technical and vocational training in Nebraska, where we operate four manufacturing plants. BD Medical established these scholarships for a two-year course of study to cultivate the specialized skills needed for careers in technology-oriented manufacturing companies. Recipients will also receive internships at BD Medical’s two sites in Columbus, Nebraska, in return for a two-year work commitment after graduation.

2014 trips
Thoughtfully designed volunteer programs build strong, effective work teams, give associates the opportunity for personal development and enhance leadership and professional skills. The impact of these experiences for our associates are realized for years beyond the initial service experience.
In 2014, volunteers through this program served a total of 3,300 hours, valued at nearly $362,000.

2014 product donation efforts
In FY'14 our product donations were valued at $3.1 million and were aimed at meeting critical healthcare needs in emergency situations and to supporting ongoing healthcare services for those at risk. The following presents one additional example of our product donation efforts in 2014.
Life for a Child - an International Diabetes Federation program
The International Diabetes Federation's Life for a Child (LFAC) program was founded with the vision that no child should die of diabetes. To date, it assists over 15,000 children and youth with diabetes in 48 countries. Since 2011, BD has donated insulin syringes and needles to LFAC, through Direct Relief International, to support the program.
In 2014, BD's donation of more than 1.1 million insulin syringes and needles reached 20 countries and assisted nearly 6,000 children and youth.

BD Helping Build Healthy Communities®
The BD Helping Build Healthy Communities program is a four-year partnership with Direct Relief and the National Association of Community Health Centers to expand access, improve care and reduce health disparities for underserved and vulnerable populations throughout the U.S. The program has two components:
- A pledge to donate at least 20 million insulin needles and syringes to community health centers across the country to support diabetes care management for uninsured and under-insured Americans.
- Innovations in Care awards to community health centers for innovative approaches to diabetes, cervical cancer and HIV prevention and management and the co-morbidities that often accompany them. A panel of experts in clinical and community healthcare in each of the three disease areas guides decisions on awards.
BD Volunteer Service Trips
Founded in 2005, our Volunteer Service Trip (VST) Program effectively combines our culture of volunteerism with our social investing philosophy. The VST Program provides opportunities for associates to serve in some of the most disadvantaged places in the world in roles that are specifically tailored to the unmet needs in each location and the expertise and passion of our associates.
In 2014, BD was presented with The International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) Inspired Practice Award for our multi-year volunteer service trip to Haiti in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. This award recognizes a global company that has created a high-impact volunteer initiative designed to meet a specific community or societal need.
Learn about the impact of our VST Program >Disaster relief
In times of disaster, BD has a long reputation of assisting those in need. We encourage associates to give to our various nonprofit partners working in disaster zones, and we contribute corporate dollars and product to aid victims in affected areas. BD donated $8.85 million in cash and products to disaster and humanitarian relief efforts in fiscal year 2014.
In 2014, BD was a recipient of the annual Power of Partnership Award from AmeriCares, in recognition of the outstanding commitment to helping disaster survivors and improving health in the developing world.

Power of Partnership Award
AmeriCares
For 28 years, BD’s commitment to AmeriCares global health and emergency response programs has helped us improve health care for millions impacted by poverty and disaster worldwide. Whether we are aiding typhoon survivors in the Philippines, or supporting U.S. clinics serving the uninsured, BD is always there.
Ebola crisis
In 2014, as the Ebola crisis in Western Africa escalated, BD was focused on making a critical contribution to the world’s response through the deployment of essential medical supplies as well as training healthcare workers and contributing cash to our Trusted Partners to support their response efforts. We donated nearly $1.3 million in cash and product and helped secure contributions from the private sector to mobilize the worldwide effort to treat the sick and to slow Ebola transmission to surrounding populations.
We worked closely with the CDC Foundation, which is chaired by BD Executive Vice President Gary Cohen, and several other organizations instrumental in the relief efforts — Direct Relief, AmeriCares, Heart to Heart International and Last Mile Health — to provide essential medical supplies and support.
When the Ebola epidemic escalated in West Africa in 2014, BD stepped forward with a lifesaving donation of medical devices to the CDC Foundation’s Global Disaster Response Fund. BD’s real-time philanthropy helped protect healthcare workers in Ebola-affected countries as they collected blood and performed intravenous therapy on patients. Through this donation, BD again showed its commitment to do the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
It is essential for BD to support the efforts of the CDC and other leading organizations as they battle Ebola on the front lines. It is also highly consistent with our company purpose of Helping all people live healthy lives, in this circumstance under the most extreme conditions. Beyond the immediate supply of devices to protect healthcare workers and cash funding, we need to collaborate to help strengthen the health system in these countries for the long term.
During the height of the crisis, the CDC Corporate Roundtable on Global Health Threats (also chaired by Gary Cohen), a biannual forum between the CDC and 30 companies, met to help accelerate the private sector’s role in addressing the outbreak. The group quickly mobilized the leadership of their companies to support the CDC’s response in the impacted countries.
In addition, BD ran a special matching gift campaign where we double-matched contributions from associates toward efforts to stop Ebola. Funds raised through this campaign (nearly $130,000) enabled the CDC Foundation and Direct Relief to perform their vital work and minimize the number of lives lost and communities destroyed.
Product donations
We are fortunate to provide the world with a wide range of essential tools for human health, and our product donation program reflects this diverse portfolio of products and services worldwide. We work closely with international nonprofit agencies and organizations to achieve humanitarian goals through in-kind product donations, and we regularly donate our products to several outstanding international relief agencies.
BD is a member of The Partnership for Quality Medical Donations (PQMD), an alliance of private voluntary organizations and medical product manufacturers dedicated to raising the standards of medical donations to meet the needs of underserved populations and disaster victims around the world.
