Onderzoek naar het gebruik van BD Vacutainer® Eclipse™-bloedafnamenaalden in Britse ziekenhuizen. (In het Engels)

A survey on the use of BD Vacutainer® Eclipse™ Blood collection needles in UK hospitals.

This study investigates the impact of using BD Vacutainer® Eclipse™ Blood Collection Needles (BD Eclipse) and Needle Holders on the rates of accidental needlestick injuries (NSIs), and the consequent reduction in costs arising from such injuries in UK hospitals. Hospitals originally using non-safety-engineered phlebotomy needles experienced an average reduction in the incidence of NSIs of more than 57% after conversion to BD Vacutainer® Eclipse™ Blood Collection Needles. The vast majority of needlestick injuries in phlebotomy occurs after the needle has been used for blood collection, but before or during disposal related activities. The safety feature of the BD Eclipse™ needle can be easily activated immediately after use, resulting in permanent shielding of the needle, and thus decreasing the time window for needlestick injuries.

Users of BD Eclipse™ needles reported a high level of satisfaction with the needles, and rated their satisfaction level significantly higher than those using non-safety-engineered needles. There was no observed difference in the ease of using BD  Eclipse™ needles compared to the conventional, non-safety-engineered needles used for phlebotomy; however, the quality of safety training and education provided to BD Eclipse™ users was clearly superior to those provided to users of non-safety-engineered needles.

Users of conventional needles listed the higher prices of safety-engineered needles as the primary reason for not switching. However, this argument does not take into account the savings accrued to the hospital due to the reduction in needlestick injuries by using safety engineered devices. The average cost of a single needlestick injury was calculated to be over £1,780 ($USD 2,997), based on cost data gathered from a survey of 75 UK facilities. The savings due to reduced NSIs offset the costs of procurement of the BD Eclipse™ needles. An average hospital in the UK can expect savings of over £96,000 ($USD 161,653) following conversion from non-safety-engineered phlebotomy needles to BD Eclipse™ needles. In addition to economic benefits, the use of safety-engineered needles also aids compliance with regulatory requirements in the UK.
