Three healthcare professionals
Our Responsibility

Caring for people and the planet

BD provides a broad range of medication delivery products, including vascular access systems and tools that support medication preparation and administration. BD medication delivery solutions are used across healthcare settings worldwide, shaping daily clinical workflows.

A commitment to advancing human health also includes a responsibility to reduce environmental impact.

BD is committed to reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and our medication delivery solutions contribute to this effort. Spanning product lifecycles, manufacturing, supply chain partnerships and collaboration with healthcare organizations, our approach is designed to support care across the continuum. These end-to-end solutions are strategies to help reduce the risk of IV catheter-related infections and complications, streamline care, improve patient outcomes and advance healthcare worker and patient safety.

Reducing environmental impact across global manufacturing

Across BD’s medication delivery solutions manufacturing network, teams run site-level projects that support sustainability. Sites focus on what matters most for their operations with emphasis on:

  • Lowering energy demand.
  • Improving operational efficiency.
  • Increasing the use of renewable energy sources.

Sites identify projects based on local conditions. Each site tracks progress locally, including operational emissions (Scopes 1 and 2), where measured.

Product design

Designing products with environmental considerations

Environmental impact is influenced by every stage of a product’s lifecycle. BD integrates sustainability principles into the development of medication delivery products and packaging by:*

  • Evaluating material choices.
  • Exploring opportunities to optimise design efficiency.
  • Identifying ways to reduce packaging volume.
  • Considering lower‑impact alternatives where feasible.
  • Evaluating regional production and supplier proximity, where feasible, to limit transport distances.

These efforts reflect an ongoing commitment to incorporate environmental considerations into future solutions while maintaining alignment with clinical needs and regulatory requirements.

*Potential environmental benefit varies by product, logistics profile, local energy sources and packaging efficiency.

Product sustainability highlights

Addressing environmental impact
in practice:

  1. Regional manufacturing

PosiFlush™ Syringes are manufactured in Fraga, Spain. Regional European production supports shorter transport distances for our European customers.

  2. Environmental management systems

ISO 14001-certified environmental management systems are implemented at manufacturing sites. As of 2022, 46 BD sites hold ISO 14001 certification, including PosiFlush™ Syringe manufacturing sites.

  3. On‑site energy

Combined Heat and Power (CHP) units are installed at the Fraga facility to provide on‑site heat and power for operations.1

  4. Recyclable packaging

Shelf cartons are made from 100% recyclable material.*

*Recycling availability depends on local programs and facilities.

  5. Volume options
Smaller volume options (3 mL and 5 mL) are available. Selecting an appropriate volume may support material efficiency and waste reduction objectives, depending on clinical practice.

At BD, we believe that integrity, respect and accountability are the core principles of sustainable and responsible business. These principles guide us as we continue to grow and innovate, ensuring that we uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct—not only within our own operations,2 but across our entire supply chain.3 Sourcing from European manufacturers supports supply chain resilience and faster delivery.4

Production: Fraga, Spain

  • Lower transport footprint.
  • Faster deliveries.
  • Less risk of supply disruptions.
  • Less risk of temperature excursion on long run transportation lead-times.
  • In line with Regulations (EU) 2025/1197 to support European manufacturing.
  • Powered by 100% renewable electricity.8

Peripheral Intravenous Catheter that last longer and fail less help reduce reinsertions, complications and overall cost of care. Better performance also means less waste, which supports value-based care and sustainability goals.

  • BD® Nexiva Closed IV Catheter System with BD® MaxZero Needle-free Connector combines the PIVC, extension set and needle-free connector in one package. Nexiva has been clinically shown to deliver up to 50% longer dwell time and reduced complications, which can lead to less material waste.9,10
  • Proprietary BD Vialon™ Catheter Material enables longer catheter dwell times, up to 144 hours. Replacing a PIVC less often could lead to less wasted catheters.9,11
  • Vialon Catheter Material has been clinically demonstrated to reduce phlebitis up to 69% compared to an fluorinated ethylene propylene catheter catheter material11-13 and 32% compared to a polyurethane catheter material catheter material.14
  • Manufactured in a facility with ISO 14001-certified environmental management system.
  • Manufactured at a facility that is powered by 66% renewable electricity.

Sustainable outcomes

How environmental stability and improved clinical outcomes can go hand-in-hand

BD is focused on improving vascular access care which can improve environmental impact. External research and BD modeling suggest that optimizing elements of the vascular access pathway can be associated with carbon reductions of up to ~1,000 kg CO₂ per patient pathway, depending on local practice and system‑level decisions. By aligning evidence‑based care with sustainability priorities, BD Vascular Access Management (VAM) supports both improved clinical outcomes and more resource‑efficient healthcare.1,2

We work with hospitals, procurement teams and public agencies, sharing practice insights, education and tools to review current approaches.

Support includes:

  • Sharing clinical practice insights.
  • Providing educational resources and training.
  • Assessing current practice with practical tools and feedback to improve care.

For additional materials, pathway overviews, resource libraries, events and partnership options, see the Vascular Access Management resource hub.
