Hektoen Enteric Agar is a moderately selective medium used for the isolation of Salmonella and Shigella species. H2S-producing organisms yield black-centered colonies. Hektoen Enteric Agar contains a high level of lactose to aid differentiation and to minimize the problem of delayed lactose fermentation.
