We empower our associates to give back and make a meaningful difference — locally and globally. Through our innovative, global Volunteer Service Trips, we invite associates to take paid time away from work to tackle some of the world's most pressing global health issues, one developing community at a time. At BD sites around the world, we also encourage our associates to join together to support local organizations that improve the health and well-being of the most vulnerable in their communities. We also match associate donations to non-profit organizations and offer mini-grants to organizations where our associates volunteer their time and talents.
For more than 20 years, BD has partnered with organizations including Direct Relief, Heart to Heart International and Project HOPE to empower associates to take time away from work to participate in immersive BD Volunteer Service Trips (VSTs) to tackle pressing global health issues in some of the most under-resourced regions in the world.
To date, BD volunteers from more than two dozen countries have been deployed to lead hands-on trainings that empower local healthcare professionals to deliver higher-quality care and create meaningful, long-term change for communities in the, Cameroon, eSwatini, Ghana, Kosovo, North Macedonia, El Salvador, Haiti, Mexico, Peru and Papua New Guinea.
For BD volunteers, these experiences also drive meaningful personal and professional growth. By working with culturally diverse teams in complex healthcare environments, volunteers build leadership skills, strengthen their global mindset, and bring valuable insights back to their roles at BD.
In key regions where BD has a strong workforce presence, our associates extend BD’s purpose beyond the workplace—strengthening community ties through meaningful volunteerism and giving.
Since 2016, in partnership with Rise Against Hunger, BD volunteer teams in dozens of cities worldwide have joined together annually in honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service to collectively package millions of shelf-stable meals for families facing food insecurity.
Our associates also take action to confront common obstacles to health, organizing drives that provide food, backpacks, hygiene and essential menstrual supplies to local pantries and schools—helping ensure access for those who need it most.
Many nonprofit organizations face pressing operational challenges—such as limited capacity, inefficient systems, or gaps in strategy—which can restrict their ability to grow and maximize impact.
BD’s skills-based volunteer opportunities enable associates to use their professional strengths to help nonprofits build stronger, more effective organizations. Together with our non-profit partner, Taproot, we assemble cross-functional teams of BD volunteers who spend a full day working hand-in-hand with nonprofits to solve pressing operational challenges.
For BD associates, these experiences offer more than volunteer hours—they provide opportunities to grow skills in new ways, collaborate with colleagues across functions, and deepen their connection to the communities BD serves.
We’re committed to amplifying the impact of associate donations and volunteerism. Through our matching gift program, BD matches 100% of the donations each associate makes to eligible non-profit organizations of their choice, up to $5,000 per U.S. associate, per calendar year. BD will also make a $250 donation to any eligible non-profit organization to which a BD associate volunteers 20 hours of community service, up to 80 hours or $1,000 per calendar year, per associate.
