BD: Science-based Climate Change Initiatives and Targets

To ensure the ongoing health of our companies, our communities and our planet, we are aiming to accelerate our efforts to reduce our environmental impact.

The Science-Based
Targets initiative (SBTi)

The Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), defines and promotes best practice in
emission reduction and net-zero targets.1 In September 2021, BD strengthened
our commitment to reduce our emissions, by joining the United Nations Race to
Zero via Business Ambition for 1.5°C, and the SBTi.2

"The business benefits of science-based climate action are clear. Leading
companies are already proving that a 1.5°C-compliant business model is possible,
and there is evidence that these companies will be best-placed to thrive as the
global economy undergoes a just transition to a net-zero future by 2050.”

In pursuit of this commitment, BD developed our climate
change targets within 3 scopes.

Scopes 1 and 2

Scopes 1 and 2 address the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which arise from our site energy consumption, both directly and indirectly.

Scope 3

Scope 3 addresses our shared emissions, which result from our activity (such as production of raw materials, transport of goods and people) and from assets controlled by stakeholders (such as emissions from suppliers, transporters and subcontractors). Shared emissions arise from all life cycle steps:

  • Raw material extraction and delivery
  • Downstream pharma customers, patient usage and end-of-life
  • BD activities upstream to our pharma customers

BD ESG: our sustainability plan in more detail

To advance our sustainability credentials, BD developed a comprehensive Environmental and
Social Governance (ESG) strategy.

This strategy identifies five areas, each associated with attainable goals which have the
most potential for generating meaningful and measurable change3:

Climate change

Minimize our contribution to global emissions and help address the unmet health needs of climate-vulnerable populations.

Product impact

Reduce the environmental footprint of our product portfolio and address customer sustainability requirements.

Responsible supply chain

Ensure supply is adaptable to disruption and contributes to strong environmental and social performance.

Human health

Maintain a healthy workforce and a culture of community health.

Transparency

Foster the trust of our stakeholders through transparent reporting on ESG issues relevant to our business.

United Nations Sustainable
Development

BD ESG: our sustainability plan in more detail

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) also inform our 2030+ ESG goals.4

With our infectious disease diagnosis and management technologies, as well as our work on health worker safety and health system capacity, BD aligns most strongly with UN SDG 3, Good Health and Wellbeing.

We also align with other SDGs that promote universal health including:

  • sdg5-sustainability

    SDG 5 Gender Equality

  • increase-supply-chain

SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth

  • sdg9-sustainability

SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

  • sdg13-sustainability

    SDG 13 Climate Action

BD reduced Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 10% and 34% of our electricity came from renewablesources in the FY 2022.⁵

Responsible supply chain

We continue to increase opportunities for small and diverse owned businesses to work with BD and created $1.1 billion in economic impact through our spending with these suppliers.⁵

Communities

BD and the BD Foundation donated more than $22.5 million in cash and products worldwide to eligible nonprofit organizations to support resilient communities and expand healthcare access and equity.⁶

Transparency

We continue to be recognized by prestigious external organizations for our efforts, especially those around transparency, including being named among the winners of the Labrador 2022 Transparency Awards, “Most Improved Overall” for demonstrating committment to enhancing corporate disclosure documents, and second for “Best Code of Conduct”.⁶

To ensure our continued success towards our Sustainability goals, we recognize the
importance of collaboration.

We are proud to include the following among our partners:

Transparency is also critical to our ESG strategy

Our commitment to good corporate governance is embodied in our Statement of Corporate Governance Principles, while the BD Board of Directors conducts oversight of our ESG goals.

In service of transparency, we submit sustainability data to various organizations and are ranked accordingly:

Product Lifecycle Assessment

BD Medical - Pharmaceutical Systems is Committed to Safety and Sustainability

Sustainability case study with the BD Hypak™ Glass Prefillable Syringe

To align with the BD ESG strategy and to generate meaningful change, BD Medical - Pharmaceutical Systems looked to science to inform our strategy.

The Product Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a science-based methodology which determines the environmental impact of all stages within the life cycle of a product. The LCA helps us identify CO2eq hotspots*, prioritize areas for action and make the right decisions for meaningful improvement. Conversely, the LCA prevents us from working on the wrong solutions or from creating impact shifts. This means that we are less likely to unknowingly degrade other stages of the product lifecycle.

Grounded on decades of BD Hypak™ experience, BD Hypak™ for Biotech has been developed to address the key compatibility challenges for biotech drugs and chronic treatments.7

For our first LCA, we selected the entire BD Hypak™ Glass Prefillable Syringe, including the syringe barrel, stopper, plunger rod, needle and cap. We evaluated its complete lifecycle: from the suppliers of our raw material through to manufacturing, patient injection and end-of- life disposal.

The LCA identified priority areas and what we could do in-house, with our suppliers and customers. Based on these results, our team developed a road map towards real-world sustainability improvements:

  • Regionalize suppliers to limit air freight
  • Replicate manufacturing globally so that pharma companies can regionalize their own supply chains
  • Increase the use of renewable energy, reduce energy consumption and waste by BD and BD suppliers
  • Introduce recycled content, and integrate eco-design into new product development and continuous improvement

*CO2eq: carbon dioxide equivalent

Safety and sustainability

The LCA methodology is applicable across all our prefillable syringes, safety systems and auto-injector devices. Establishing sustainability goals presents new opportunities for us to further innovate for efficiency and safety, all while reducing the environmental footprint of our products.

Looking ahead

To ensure the longevity of our sustainability goals, the BD Medical - Pharmaceutical Systems Road Map must align with our customers’ and suppliers’ goals.

As we work on Scopes 1 and 2*, we will continue to engage with our industry partners to develop Scope 3, which focuses on shared emissions.**

In order to reach our sustainability targets, collaboration across the industry is essential. Our partnerships are key.

We all benefit from sustainability initiatives: in a spirit of collaboration and mutual support, we will continue Advancing Towards a Healthy Planet, Together.

*Scopes 1 and 2 address the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which arise from the energy our sites consume, both directly and indirectly.

**Scope 3 addresses our shared emissions, which result from our activity (such as production of raw materials, transport of goods and people) and from assets controlled by stakeholders (such as emissions from suppliers, transporters and subcontractors).
