The Benefits of Ready-to-Use Wound Irrigation in the OR

There is no room for compromise in the OR.

In the operating room (OR), every second matters. From pre-operative prep to post operative care, surgical teams rely on smooth and consistent workflows to keep procedures on track. One area that can improve operational efficiency but is often overlooked is wound irrigation.

Why Wound Irrigation Matters

Wound irrigation is a routine part of many surgical procedures, yet the way it’s handled can vary. Irrigation solutions that require manual mixing are prone to inconsistency, and every
variation in preparation can lead to increased risk. In addition, irrigation products which
are not specifically labeled as “sterile” may increase the risk of compromising sterility in the OR.

Key Benefits of Ready-to-Use Irrigation

  1.  Time Savings in the OR: Ready-to-use solutions may reduce the time spent prepping a solution manually. By eliminating the need for measuring, diluting, and mixing, healthcare teams can dedicate more time to patient care rather than product preparation, increasing overall efficiency in the operating room.
  2. Streamlined Workflow: During cases, manual prep takes staff away from other important responsibilities. By switching to ready-to-use solutions, hospitals can reduce the need for manual prep and free-up valuable resources for other tasks.
  3. Fewer Opportunities for Error: The use of ready-to-use wound irrigation reduces the risk of preparation errors, which can lead to challenges in the OR. With ready-to-use options, you can reduce variability in wound irrigation processes and practice, improve control, confidence and quality assurance.
  4. Reliability & Quality Assurance: Ready-to-use wound irrigation delivers reliable performance you can count on. This level of consistency supports surgical teams’ confidence in irrigation performance.

Why Choose BD® Surgiphor™ Irrigation System?

BD® Surgiphor™ Antimicrobial Irrigation System is a pre-mixed, terminally sterile povidone-iodine (PVP-I) wound irrigation solution. It delivers a dilute PVP-I lavage to mechanically loosen and remove debris and foreign materials, including microorganisms from wounds, during surgery. Here are some of the key benefits you could offer your patients and team with the BD® Surgiphor™ Irrigation System:

  • Provides 99.99% reduction of bacteria with PVP-I as a preservative in the solution*^†,1
  • Faster time to complete kill of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus compared to the CHG preservative in Irrisept (15 seconds vs. 5-minutes)#,2
  • Reduces the risk of unwanted microbial growth in the solution up to 24 hours after the bottle is opened*^,1
  • Aligns with current guidelines from the CDC3, WHO4 and SHEA5  to use dilute PVP-I for surgical wound irrigation

In today’s high-pressure surgical environment, every step that can be simplified matters. Ready-to-use wound irrigation cuts prep time, may reduce contamination risk, and delivers predictable results—so your team can focus on what truly matters: patient safety.
