In port access, compliance with best practice is critical
When it comes to port access, every step matters. Central-line bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) remain a significant risk, with as many as 250,000 CLABSIs occurring annually in the U.S.¹ Of the patients who develop a CLABSI, as many as 1 in 4 may not survive.²
To address this risk, the Infusion Nurses Society (INS) recommends following a standard Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT®) designed to help reduce the likelihood of infections.
INS Standards also note the use of single-use kits and barriers to help establish an aseptic field.
All-in-one port access designed to promote best practices
BD® AllPoints™ Port Access Systems bring together the key components needed to help support aseptic technique and promote consistency with port access guidelines.
Each kit is sterile, organized in procedural sequence and designed to aid clinicians in following ANTT® and INS standards across teams and shifts. Procedural checklists are included to help guide consistent technique and support standardization in practice.

| Access the port with the smallest-gauge non-coring needle to accommodate the prescribed therapy; use of a safety engineered non-coring needle is recommended and required in some jurisdictions. Confirm that a port and the non-coring needle are indicated for power injection before using it for this purpose. |
Non-coring needles are available in a wide variety of gauge sizes for use with implanted ports. |

| Consider chlorhexidine-containing dressings in adults and patients over 2 months of age. Guidelines for oncology patients suggest use of a chlorhexidine- containing dressing around the needle insertion site based on duration of infusions exceeding 4 to 6 hours. |
Configurations include additional CHG disc and gel pad options, including the BD® GuardIVa™ Antimicrobial Hemostatic IV Dressing. |

| Use a transparent semipermeable membrane (TSM) dressing that covers the non-coring needle and access site when the port is accessed. Secure the non-coring needle to reduce the risk for needle dislodgement and subsequent risk for infiltration/extravasation (eg, sterile tape strips), assuring protection of skin integrity around the insertion site. |
